Danube Valley Boat Tour

My wife & I will be in Vienna in May, & would like to take the Danube Valley boat tour to Melk. On various internet sites, we can advance book for around 60 euros each. Is it cheaper to make a reservation through our hotel when we arrive? Or can we just go to the boat dock and pay on the day we wish to depart?

Hi PGH_Esquire:

I live in Budapest and sometimes take a boat from here to Vienna when friends/family come over (I'm originally from the States). In all cases expect once in August we just boought tickets the day before and likely could have bought them the same day. You should be fine in May as I cannot imagine a huge rush. I'm sorry that I cannot comment on the potential price savings.....hope you enjoy your trip! Jeremy from Budapest

it wouldn't be cheaper through the hotel. hotels charge a 10% downpayment from the official rate, the rest you pay with DDSG.

rates are on http://www.ddsg-blue-danube.at

Vienna - Krems by train - round trip EUR 27 single EUR 13.50

Vienna - Melk by train - round trip EUR 31 single EUR 15.50

Krems - Melk by boat - round trip EUR 22.50 single EUR 17.50

The DDSG offers an all-in-one ticket that includes the train trip to the Wachau, the boat trip in the Wachau and entry to the Melk Abbey. (I admit the DDSG's brochure is a little confusing about this.)

http://www.ddsg-blue-danube.at/en_index.asp

When we were there last summer, we met some people who took a DDSG train-cruise-cycle trip from Vienna. I think it was offered on Sundays. This is one of the easiest and most beautiful bike rides in the world. (We middle-aged folk spent four days cycling there with our daughter strapped to the back.)

I think you can also buy your DDSG tickets at the train station.

JoJoKo -- I agree that their brochure is a little confusing. I will focus on the part of the catalog that you reference.

Many thanks,

We spent four nights in Vienna and five in Dürnstein in the Wachau part of the Danube. The Wachau was the absolute highlight. Think about spending more than a day there so you can enjoy the many sights, including the vineyards. Vertical gave us some excellent recommendations.

I just return from a small vacation and see this posting about one of my favorite places- the Danube, especially in the Wachau.

It is not needed to pre book .

As you probably already see in the tours and websites mentioned numerous offerings.

I would not take the boat from Vienna to the Wachau or Melk.

The trip from Vienna to the first nice place, Krems is not really interesting. It also takes a long time.

Taking the combi ticket - train Vienna- Melk , Abbey tour , then the ship to Krems or Dürnstein, then train back to Vienna is much better in my opinion.Price for all above ( also a nice museum in Krems) is 42,40 euro.

Buy your ticket at the Westbahnhof ( train station )

The Brandner ship line also offers tours.

http://www.brandner.at

in english too.

these are similar to the DDSG.

You can of course create your own trip buying a train ticket and ship ticket separate.

Perhaps train to Melk ( http://www.oebb.at for schedule) Melk, the boat trip to Dürnstein ( this part of the danube Wachau is the nicest view- some time in Dürnstein to sightsee- then the local train from Dürnstein to Krems for an easy transfer to Vienna.

Or I am often in this area in the summer- could always meet you- show some of the special places including some very nice wineries- we can stop for a glass of good white wine.

A newly announced trip to this area may be interesting to some. It includes an interesting stop at a very good wine exhibit with wine trasting and also boat trip.

It will be offered each Sunday beginning in May 6 to October.

It includes for 34 euro ,bus trip from Vienna ( by State Opera) to the town of Langenlois and a visit to the Loisium ( wine exhibit in old cellars , with audio guide, gratis wine tasting, a, boat trip from Krems to Spitz in the Wachau and return by bus to Vienna.

I find more and post it here.

I have taken U S friends to the Loisium. They enjoyed this very much,

the wine too.

Trip starts at 10 return by 6 PM. a very interesting day.

we did the combi-ticket on a beautiful day last july. highly recommend it. no reservations required...just went to train station and bought tickets....lots of room. was about 40 euros each i think. train trip from vienna to melk, toured the abbey, fantastic lunch, boat ride to durnstein and krems, and then train back to vienna. absolutely wonderful day....relaxing and not rushed. we eventually went back to durnstein later in our trip and spent our last nite there. hope that helps.
