Weather can be rather nasty in Vienna in December with rain and snowfall easily possible. If you want to stroll around and enjoy the parks, it might be better to come in September-October or May-June.

On the other side, December will be great to explore all the museums and palaces, performing arts etc. Also, in December there are numerous charming Christmas markets and many streets are decorated for shoppers and strollers.

Hi Instruction01:

My wife and I live in Budapest and visit Vienna since its so close every now and then. But, each year in December we make our annual Vienna Christmas market trip to enjoy the awesome market in front of the beautiful city hall building.

Is it cold? Yes. In our years visiting the the temps (in celcius) have ranged from -1 to 6 for the highs and -5 to 3 for the lows. And it has both snowed and rained on us. But during the holiday season it gets a bit festive and no worries - there is always a coffee house somewhere in your vicinity. Staying 14 days will also allow you to explore areas outside of Vienna which could be really nice, especially if we're lucky and have some snow. (We've had a relatively warm winter this year with little snow).

One tip - be sure to stay in a well positioned hotel to wherever you believe you will be exploring the most. However, Vienna has an excellent transportation system, so you can always catch a ride to your destination.

Enjoy Vienna!

My husband and I went to Vienna at the beginning of December last year and got clear blue skies and mild temperatures (we wore coats, but didn't need much else). It was a fantastic time to go and explore the Christmas markets (and drink lots of hot wine and punch!).

I think that if you travel in winter, you always take the chance with cold and stormy weather, but then you could travel in the height of summer and get rainy days as well.

Winter is wonderful in Vienna. Less crowds. If it is raining, you can always relax in a cafe. Kaffee und kuchen taste much better in the winter than in the muggy summer.

jojoko - thank you very reassuring - i haven't done anysightseeing in vienna for close to ten years - one of the things i loved about the city were the coffee kafes where you can drink coffee and read the newspapers - no other city has this - and the waitors don't mind.
