We wish to visit the Palace during our stay in Vienna, but on reviewing the Palace web site it seems that tickets must be pre booked and a visiting time is allocated. Is this correct or can you just turn up and join the queue. We will be there early July.

Thank you

we did the online purchase before we went eve though we were there in winter and the queues 'apparently' wouldn't be as long...so glad we did because we just showed up in the gift shop about 15 mins before the allotted time we had chosen (11am) picked up the tickets and went to go and line up. The palace was so busy it was ridiculous...in hindsight we would have chosen a much earlier time because i think we got there when all the tour groups got there and it was shoulder to shoulder the whole way through. Some of the guides talked and yalled at their groups so loud it was hard to hear the audio guide!

long story short sorry i can't answer your exact question but i would reccommend going earlier in the morning or later in the afternoon if you're there in summer. The palace is excellent and we also got the ticket which included the Sisi museum in the hofburg and also the imperial silver collection (boring) and also one other thing i can't remember right now but was also in the hofburg.

You can pre book-buy tickets on-line or as you say just show up.

All tickets will have an alotted time to begin the tour. This is to assist in crowd control.

Your ticket must be inserted in a turnstile device to allow entry. If you are there at the wrong time ( + or minus a few minutes) admission is refused.

Your pre booked ticket must be picked up 30 minutes before the alloted entry time or ticket can be voided. This limits your flexibility and conveniience.

Many think it is just more convenient to just arrive, buy your ticket and wait for your admission time. Many other things at the palace to keep you busy - the gardens- carriage collection cafe- restaurant etc.

It is best to make this visit in nice weather to allow a good walk through the gardens.

I have always advised people to arrive later in the afternoon - or early in the morning. afternoon seems best.

Tour bus groups seem to be there in hundreds mid morning as mentioned before.

open hours are 8:30 - 18:00 ( 6 PM.)

If you like operettas

The Schönbrunn Palace Theater has Die Fledermaus - a nice show in a perfect setting .

July 13- August 26.

Nice combination

a palace tour - a quick meal at the Restaurant by the Schloss- then the musical evening

Be sure to have very comfortable walking shoes. The garden is absolutely huge, and you should also walk up the hill to appreciate the view of the Palace itself and also Vienna on the other side.

Last July we just showed up at 11:30 on a Saturday. (Clearly we hadn't consulted TA about this!) Our tickets let us in immediately. There was no queue, either. Not that it wasn't crowded -- it was way way chock full of tourists. But the folks at Schonnbrunn do crowd control well.

Hi MM,

this is another link directly to the palace website and you can read and check out plus book your ticket thru it.

We went also in the afternoon as it is less crowded but you never know and it is better to book your ticket online rather than went straight and purchase the ticket there as the queue is very long!

As vertical has so rightly said: Get there early in the am or late pm to avoid the hordes of tour buses and tourists. Much easier to enjoy your tour when not being jostled by the crowds. We have been several times, usually early am and once late am, and never had a problem with just walking up and buying tickets without large lines. Either way, enjoy the beautiful gardens after the tour. I liked them so much I would take the U-bahn out several times during the course of a few days just to photograph them in different light. Morning shots are great, while evenings, when the sun gets lower provide some real beauty to behold.

Thank you all for the advice; I think mid to late pm is probably the best option. We will arrange tickets and try to view the gardens, and get some photos either before or after the Palace. I do agree that late afternoon is a very good time for photos.

We just turned up around 10.30 last August and the que to get in went from the main gate to the palace. When we finally got in the palace there were far to many people to be able to look around. My advice is to leave the palace until later in the day and enjoy the gardens that are free. The walk up to the Gloriette is quite steep but the views are amazing. I would have like to have spent more time walking in the gardens and will give the palace a miss next time. I think there are some Roman ruins on the LH side somewhere. It must be the best free day out in Vienna.
