Vienna for 2 nites w/ 10 yr old

We'll be taking a train from Budapest to Vienna and spending a couple of nights before flying out. Any advice on where to stay? We will have been staying at a very high end hotel in Budapest but don't want to spend that type of money. Thinking of taking him to see the Lippazaners. Any other events or places that you think a 10 yr old might enjoy? Also any reasonable hotels w/ larger rooms in a central location?

The Vienna Tourism website has a very good page about Vienna for Children:

http://info.wien.at/article.asp?IDArticle=10597

When are you in Vienna as the time of year can influence recommendations?

As far as the hotel goes the above link also has a connection for hotels with family rooms under "Family Special". You are likely to get some good hotel recommendations from the posters to this forum who live in Vienna, but it would help them if you could give an idea of what price range you're looking at.

Hopefully we could find a centrally located hotel, near public transportation so we could get to the airport, for under 100 euro. We will be there mid-Feb.

are hotels located in the "city center" the best for us in terms of ease of transportation(train and to airport) and walking to attractions?

I have booked a room at hotel Austria for later in the year for my family of 4. I emailed the hotel direct & asked them what type of rooms they have that would be suitable for my family. They were very prompt to reply & specific to the particular questions I asked in regards to room size & type of bedding etc.

Vienna is a great city for children.

Your 10yo old might like to take a horse carriage ride with you - they leave from most tourist locations within the Inner Stadt, particularly around the Hofburg Palace. They are touristy and are pricey though.

The Schönbrunn Palace also has the Zoo (Tiergarten).

At the Prater there are many amusement rides and of course the Giant Ferris Wheel.

The House of Music is a hands on experience and one I really rec: http://www.hdm.at

There are many parks where you can have lunch, and plenty of centrally located grocery stores where you can go and buy picnic goodies. Don't forget the fantastic Wusrt Stands where you can buy yummy hotdogs.

Two words: Prater and Schönbrunn.

Schönnbrunn also has an amazing maze and a children's museum. We spent the entire day there with our three year-old and I would have done the same if it were just me.

Prater, as the other poster mentioned, has the Ferris Wheel. We also loved the train that makes two or three stops around the park. You can also rent those pedal-bike things for four.

When I was a kid, I liked the Treasury at the Hofburg. Crowns and jewels were fascinating, the real stuff of kings.

I agree that you want to stay in District 1, even if it costs more than you expect.

Maybe the Schmetterling House (butterfly conservatory) and the Prater.
