We'll be in Vienna from midday Monday Aug 11th until early evening the 12th, and we were wondering whether children are welcome to performances (either opera or classical) in the various theatres in the evening (or in a park during the day)- and if there is a particular performance that might appeal to younger folk (aged 6 to 10)?

They do behave - but we do not want to go against local custom.

Also, we'd like to take a little time in a traditional Viennese cafe or coffee house - is it going to be impossible find a nice choice for lunch or evening meal without crowds within walking distance of Ringstrasse at this time of year?

Also - do we need to book either in advance?

Thanks for any advice or direction.

Odd to see you, Ferdia, out of your native Ireland forum -- and asking for advice, instead of giving it.

Give the Marionette Theatre in Schloss Schönbrunn a try. Our three year-old daughter loved loved loved it, as did me and my husband. (So much so that I email the theatre every year to ask about their winter touring schedule -- so far, no visits to Texas (boo-hoo))

I see there is a performance of "The Magic Flute" on the 11th. You definitely need to book in advance.

As far as cafes go, no problem with kids. We ate at Cafe Demel and Cafe Central. Both kid friendly in different ways: Demel has a great display of over-the-top confectionaries and a view into the production process. Central has a pianist and is a little bit more relaxed. Demel was a zoo at lunch.

Jokok - thanks, I'll book that this PM.

We're taking a few short, and a few more extended stays this summer - so its hard to get things nailed down for the short parts.

Thanks for you helpful advice - we'll make good use of it!

Nick - strolling around and calling into somewhere that sounds like a nice idea - must just be the way to go with the cafes, thanks!
