Has anyone ever taken the Winery Bike tour departing from Vienna? It seems interesting, yet online information is limited and seems sketchy. Any tips?

You do not mention a name of tour company or the tour - I assume it is one for about 95 US Dollars and lasts about 8 1/2 hours .

Travel time by bus from Vienna to the Wachau region takes about 1 Hour 15 minutes - 1 1/2 hours each way - thus your true tour time is 5 1/2 hours - The scenery from Vienna to Krems - the gaeway to the Wachau is OK but certainly not that interesting- unless you like mostly farm fields and anti- sound barriers.

To do the things mentioned in the propaganda and wine tasting also- means very little time in any one place. Practically impossible to all things and swim in the Danube too.

Exploring Dürnstein alone and hiking up to the Richard LionHeart castle ruins would take several hours.

I do not know when you have time to ride bikes any distance-

The Wachau district Melk - Krems is about 35 kilomters ( 20-21 miles ).

Saying the above - this wine growing area is well worth a visit .

I suggest that you look at the various offers provided by the following

http://www.ddsg-blue-danube.at

under heading Wachau cruises you will find various ways to see much in this area - at less cost too and at your desired pace.

These trips allow some ways for you to allocate time to things you really like or wish to spend extra time - even taking extra time to sample the wine and cooking of the many nice small places you will find.

Great info--thank you. I'm not sure what the tour company is...the online store selling the tour won't share until you buy, which has me wary.

Thanks again.

Probably the website you found is not the tour operator - just a marketing group as you mention.

I personally would not wish to work with a group that will only tell you the tour operator after you have paid them.

Hi! I did something that sounds very similar - The Grape Grazing tour.

Bus picked us up where we travelled to a winery, tasted the wines and got on our bikes.

From there we rode through the towns and we did have enough time to visit the castle ruins at Dürnstein, a few other towns in the Wachau, have lunch, tastings, etc however it was a gloss over each town.

Boat excursions are also offered however I imagine these would likewise visit each town in the same amount of detail (not including the wine tasting aspects either).

Or to do things at your own pace trains to Melk, Pöchlarn, and Ybbs depart from the Westbahnhof in Vienna, while trains to Krems and Spitz depart from Franz Josef Bahnhof. Bicycles can be hired at the train stations of Krems, Melk, Spitz, Pöchlarn, and Ybbs.

If you're really itching to do some bicycling, do it! You can put together a day -- or more --of cycling on your own without any trouble. We did four days of cycling from Dürnstein and had the bikes delivered.
