All I have is that my great grandfather by the name of Benjamin Lockwood owned a woollen mill in Huddersfield years ago. My mother's dad's name was also Benjamin Lockwood. The original Ben (my great grandfather) was active in the Anglican church in Huddersfield. I have no way of knowing if the town has more than one Anglican church. I will be staying in York May 7,8,9,10 & 11 of this year! If anyone reading this has any information that could help me, I would be very grateful. I will be staying at the Bootham B&B and my name is Patricia Underwood. I am Canadian and live just north of Toronto, Canada. A month in England and Scotland is a dream come true and a connection with my ancestors would certainly be icing on my cake! Thanks in advance and please call me at the Bootham B&B if you can help me. Thanks very much. |

Hiya I assume you have looked at some of the Census documents which are now on line? Do you have any idea of dates for your great grandfather? I have just spent literally a couple of minutes on this website, inputting the name Benjamin Lockwood into the 1901 census and it throws up some results in Huddersfield. There's a 3 year old boy called Benjamin Lockwood so he would have been born in 1898 - does that sound about right? There ar others with the same name listed as Woollen Weavers close by. You have to pay (it's not too expensive) if you want to see some of the records in more details. www.1901census.nationalarchives.gov.uk/ This could be a good starting point for you, but you do need some dates, even if they are approximate ones.

Meant to say - you can search on other census's, not just the 1901 one.

Hello patgal, Lockwood is a very common name in Huddersfield (there is even a district of the town called Lockwood) and there were also a number of woollen mills. I have read that there was a mill owned by a Lockwood family in nearby Linthwaite. There are a number of Anglican churches in Huddersfield including the Holy Trinity Church amongst others. You can find a list of places of worship of this website: city-visitor.com/huddersfield/placesofworshi… Sorry this is not much help, but it might help narrow down the names a bit. I hope you have a wonderful trip to England; I lived in Huddersfield for four years, it is a nice town.

In case you hadn't thought of it, there are three trains per hour from York to Huddersfield, journey time about 50 minutes. It's not a classic tourist destination, but given your connection might be worth a visit.
