Appreciate your reccomendations of a nice place to stay for a family of 2 adults and 2 kids9 10 and 12yrs old) on a budget of below 180USD.

what would be the closest area to CBD which could be an option not too far from CBD and more quiet. We need only a big room for 4 bathroom and either refrigerator or nothing if less expensive.

thank you

Selmo

Hello Selmo

We are visiting Sydney in August for 9 /10 days in Auguust. We to want a quiet stay for the first 5 nights of our stay.

We have booked with the Cremorne Point Manor, after reading thier reviews.

Hopefully it will prove a good choice,a bit of peace and quiet an 8 minute ferry trip across the harbour from Central Quay at a reasonable cost.

Have a look on http://www.wotif.com.au for on overview on what is available to you regarding budget and location. Its an excellent webpage which gives you a fab view on all apartments/hotels within the CBD.

An apartment would suit your needs..so maybe look into these.

Thank you all.

Are there neighbourhoods and accmodations up to 20mins from CBD which could be less expensive and more quiet ?

'more quiet' is not guaranteed being further out of the city...you could be hours outside of Sydney, but if your accommodation is near busy and noisy roads then you are no better off than sleeping smack bang in the centre of the city.

The other issue with staying further out is that you may be in another travel zone whic hwould make trips into the city more expensive.

Are the places on the links provided not to your liking? Or is there just nothing there in your budget range?

If you travel by train, heading out west Burwood or Strathfield would be around your 20 min limit. Heading north, maybe Chatswood (or a bit further) on the north shore line. I don't travel on the southern lines, so can't help there.

Your other options are to head east toward the beaches (eg Bondi & Coogee) but some of the places here can be quite noisy.

I would agree with nitarudi. You will not find nice , quiet, well located accomodation under USD 180 in Sydney (or any other City in Aust. I would think). What you see on wotif.com is as good as it usually gets. Regional areas (right out of the city-hours, may be cheaper, but probably not enough).

Have you looked at Youth Hostels?

Quality Cambridge is around the corner from where I live. Certainly not a quiet area!!! (Hence its attraction to DINK hedonists like me and the boyfriend). The location is certainly convenient - walk down Oxford and across Hyde Park to the CBD, walk straight down Campbell St to Chinatown and beyond to Darling Harbour. Or Jump on a bus on Oxford St to any of the Eastern suburbs beaches or into Circular Quay to catch a ferry to somewhere or other. Within walking distance are Crown St & Cleveland Surry Hills and Victoria St Darlinghurst - great for restaurants. There's a supermarket just 100m down the road too for slef-catering.

Unfortunately Friday and Saturday nights in our neighbourhood aren't too pretty. 10 years ago it was the centre of gay nightlife, so was vibrant colourful and safe. Nowadays the area attracts mostly boofheads from the suburbs on weekends who spill out of clubs and bars drunk, drugged, rowdy and obnoxious. Best tuck the kiddies up in bed early on the weekend :-) Having said that, Cambridge apartments are a couple of hundred metres away from the thick of the action, so apart from a few sirens during the night, you won't have any problems.

I checked out many many budget and low-end places before settling on Sydney Harbour B&B. We loved it and would stay there again, even if we could afford a more expensive place to rest our heads. Here's its listing and prices (in Australian dollars) for their quad room:

The Lachlan - Single - $214 Double - $228 - 3 people $248 - 4 people $268

Spacious family room with both a queen-size and 2 single beds*. Also has table & chairs, fridge and tea & coffee making facilities. The room has a large private bathroom (located in the hall next to the room)

I recommend it: Great location in The Rocks, great proprietor, great ambience, great breakfast, great advice, great everything. Great dog (named Mate), too. Quiet room despite the B&B being next to a major road off the bridge. Ah, the wonders of triple-paned windows!

Unfortunately, that's $238 USD, (yikes, the dollar keeps on falling), but given that we wanted to be centrally located in a decent place, this is what we came up with.
