Im coming to Oz for the first time in Feb 2009. I am flying into Sydney and having a night in Sydney before going upto Brisbane to meet friends.

Does anyone have any suggestions where a nice place to stay woould be? its my first time travelling alone so i am bit nervous. Also any nice resturants where i can eat alone without feeling out of place?

I guess it all depends on your personal tastes and financial situation.A few good hotels near airport,or city including hostels etc,at Central. But as you are flying again the next day id stay near the airport, saves time etc lugging bags etc around.

As far as eating alone is concerned again depends on what you like to eat etc.You will find many places have people eating alone,so.

Can easierly go into town via the train or Bondi via bus to find places.

Kat - you forgot to tell us the time you arrive and the time you depart and your hotel budget.

I think you should stay in the CBD - the surrounding airport area is really only suitable if you do not have time to do any sightseeing at all.

My goodness - it would be a shame to come to Sydney and not see our famous icons - the Sydney Harbour Bridge and the Opera House.

Perhaps if you arrive in the morning you can drop off your bags at your hotel and get yourself onto the Hop on Hop Off Bus - during the day and then do a walk around the Rocks and Circular Quay area. If you have time to squeeze in Darling Harbour I would attempt that too. You maybe more comfortable dining during the lunch hour (and do a bit of people watching )and have a quiet dinner in your hotel if you feel uncomfortable about being on your own.

I don't know your budget, but a single room at the Bed and Breakfast Sydney Harbour in the Rocks (next to Circular Quay) is AUD140. It's an excellent location; a nice place to stay with good managers; and you would not feel out of place at all there as a single woman.

Thanks for the advice so far. i arrive at in Sydney at 9am and leaver around 11am the next day. Jet lag will have big factor no doubt, but i am coming back to sydney at the end of my trip to see the city properly. I just want a nice hotel no more thatn $150 dollars really which offers breakfast.

Can you tell me more about the hop on hop off bus? where does it run from etc.

Cheers

Choices are limited with that budget. Try

Metro Hotel on Pitt Street

Park Regis

The Great Southern Hotel

Re Sydney Explorer - stops are all around Sydney. You will have to choose the stop using the map at the aforementioned website - which is closest to your chosen hotel. I think there are 27 stops all around Sydney CBD.

Thanks again for the info. Can always go bit over budget for the hotel was thiniking about the ibis and think there is a holiday in the centre.

To pick your brain again which is the easiest way to get from airport to the centre, never very good in new places till i get my bearings.

You have been great help so far

Cheers

"easiest" and "cheapest" are usually opposites - taxi is always easiest but I find the train is pretty convenient if your hotel is very central (small "c" not Central - which isn't).

I haven't stayed at the Ibis in town, but location wise it's pretty good, down the cheaper end of the city, but certainly walkable or cheap bus fare (about $2)to all attractions...opera house, main city shopping, gardens, hyde park etc.

You are also close to Central and Town Hall train stations, which both connect to the airport train line, which will be cheaper and quicker than a taxi in peak hour.

Also close to cheaper end of town for eating...ie China town, or again a cheap bus fare to Glebe, Leichhardt or Newtown which have interesting eating strips....these are suburbs around the uni, so very vibrant and safe .

If I were travelling alone I would chose B&B Sydney Harbour. (Honestly, I would chose it anytime...)

B&B Sydney Harbour will enable you to chat with other folks at breakfast and you will be centrally located in The Rocks. Jeff the owner will point you in the right direction of a restaurant where you won't feel out of place (although the restaurants in Sydney, even the really nice ones, were so hospitable to our four year-old that I don't think you'll have any trouble.)
