good food anyone?

Hi all,

I'm going on a honeymoon and staying in Port Douglas for 4 nights.

I see all these great places to eat, however we cannot afford a $200 dinner every night! Of course I'm trying to go to a fancy dinner with course menus for maybe 1 night but I need some suggestions for good reasonably priced meals that are native to the city and land? looking for more of the food experience!

Native to the land, I mean seafood (oyster, bugs and barramundi). And more importantly, signature dishes that we need to eat!

Also our hotel has a full kitchen so is there a market where I can purchase fresh seafood grocery's.

And since I'm a tourist, is there any ways I can save money on food?

If you are staying in the town center, there is a reasonable Coles Supermarket on Macrossan St (Main Street). There are plenty of less costly restaurants and cafes in Port Douglas. Mango Jam (Macrossan St) is usually good and busy, Soul and Pepper (Dixie St) for al fresco dining, The Tin Shed at the Combined Club about 25 metres left of Soul and Pepper where the locals eat and the PD Yacht Club on Spinnaker Close at the other side of the marina from Marina Mirage (just follow the railway track). These are all good reasonably priced eateries serving good local food. The PD Yacht Club has sailing nights on Wednesdays with a good chance of getting a free sail for a hour or so before you eat.

I have not been yet but hear great reviews for Mojos of Mossman. Mossman, a little drive, is not tourism resort town so prices are usually better. Not necessarily cheap but better value for money than you get in Port Douglas.

here is a link for Trip Advisor Reviews.

Soul and pepper closed it's doors many months ago, so don't bother with that one. You can also get good reasonably priced meals at the two hotels (pubs) in town, The Courthouse as well as The Central. Paddys Bar is also offering good food at present at reasonable prices. Another little gem is the Rattle N Hum, a bar come pizzeria that also has alfresco dining. There are options, a little of these mixed with your self prepared meals and a good dining experience at one of the top restaurants will have you enjoy your honeymoon. Congratulations.

Excerpts from the half-written trip report:

Rattle N Hum was surprisingly good. At first we were put off by the fact that it's a chain (we saw one in Cairns) and the menu seemed uninspired. We were wrong. Basic menu but done very well.

The Central Hotel's seafood platter was disappointing and provided us with the worst meal of our stay in PD. Mostly salt and pepper calamari with a few bugs or whatever thrown in so they could call it a platter.

Not seafood, but Mocka's pies were yummy and very easy on the budget. Best veggie pie I've ever had.

All in all, PD was a great place for food.
