Some advice please on restaurants and bars!

Hi there

I am travelling to Budapest in 2 days time with my husband. We haven't been there for 4 years so what are the best restaurants/bars to go to nowadays? I see the weather is very hot at the moment so we'd like to dine outside in the evening. We will be staying near the synagogue so we don't mind walking up to Liszt Ference Ter. Any recommendations for that general area? Thanks!

The English language blog Chew.hu has a solid Top 33: http://www.chew.hu/top33.html.

The listings have links to helpful embedded Google maps. It pretty much covers the array of available restaurants here and doesn't acknowledge most hotel restaurants. There's also no representation of the kitsch Hungarian gypsy music place in the list that some enjoy.

Liszt Ferenc ter is pretty much a sea of mediocrity, although still a great location for outdoor relaxing. Some people still regard Menza for its good prices and solid food, but many are turned off by their unreliable wait staff.

A nearby place that I highly recommend is Klassz, which is near Liszt ter on Andrássy. Other nearby good places are Balettcipő and Cafe Bouchon. (however none of the above mentioned places have a great outdoor set up)

A few weeks back my wife and I went for a stroll on Margit Sziget (Margaret Island) around 7:00pm. there is a new-ish restaurant called HoldUdvar (Moon Garden) which serves really nice food - and beer about 600 yards on to the island on the right.

The island is where the good folk of Budapest go to relax - the river flows both sides so it has a micro-climate which is a bit cooler than the rest of the city. It was 35 degrees there yesterday...

Personally I avoid Liszt Ferenc Ter like the plague, pastiches of Hungarian food and read the bill carefully when it arrives - no thanks.

Hi elderlemonIreland,

The above posts are right on - I also just ate on Margit Sziget, and the whatever-the-Moon place was pretty good (cold beer + decent food).

Liszt Ferenc ter is a great place for people watching and relaxing. The food? Its fine but nothing fancy. And the prices are a somewhat more than other places due to the location/tourist hub/etc.

See my past posts about good restaurants. Close to the synagogue includes: Cafe Kor, Trattoria, Gerloczy Cafe among others.

Have fun!

Thanks everyone! Had a bit of a hiccup with our accommodation so we might actually stay on Margaret Island since the weather is so hot at the moment. Looking forward to our trip. Thanks again.
