Hey guys, just after a bit of advice.
Ideally we'd probably like to take I80 up to somewhere near Truckee before making our way down past Lake Tahoe (either east or west side) onto 395 and then through Death Valley to Vegas over those days, but am kind of concerned about the roads at that time of the year. Firstly how often does I80's Donner Summit (Pass) close each year, and secondly the roads in and around Lake Tahoe from I80 to 395, are they likely to be drivable at that time?
If this is not really an option we'd likely opt to take hwy 1 down the coast to Cambria and then via Paso Robles, Bakersfield etc, and then depending on time possibly heading up 395 to then again cross Death Valley.
We dont exactly have any major plans on either route where we'll spend probably more than an hour or 2 stopped (other than overnight), but we would like to still take reasonable time stopping for a happy snap or good feed etc.
Scenery wise I'd imagine both are fairly spectacular but we live only an hour from the Great Ocean Road over here in Australia so the Sierra Nevada / Death Valley would be something completely different from what we're used to.
BTW I have driven in both the US, and in wintery moutain conditions in NZ so neither concern me too much, I just dont want to be researching the I80 route only to find our idea is not even possible at that time of the year.
Thanks very much in advance for any help!
