Rain....and more rain?

Getting ready, and very excited to be visiting Colorado next week beginning Tuesday, the 17th. What is going on with all the rain? By watching news reports it appears that the whole state is underwater! Not to sound insensitive because it looks tragic for those of you living there...but is this something we should be concerned about? We will visiting much of the state beginning in CO Springs, then to RMNP, Aspen, Vail, and every beautiful place in between.

Yep we've got some rain. It is supposed to turn warm and dry Monday so your timing looks great. Maybe RMNP towards the end of your trip if possible. Vail and Aspen are not in the affected areas.

And the sun just came out at my house for the first time today. Hope it makes an appearance in the harder hit areas.

Unfortunately, pouring here.

Yes, if you can make Estes the end of your trip. The video I have seen is heartbreaking for Estes and Lyons.

This weather pattern is HIGHLY unusual.

My favorite local meteorologist (Mike Nelson) says: "By Monday, the atmosphere will finally dry out over the central Rockies and temperatures will return to their mid-September norms in the low 80s. The warm and dry pattern will stick around through the middle of next week."

After that? Anyone's guess.

I agree with alli. Put Estes Park last in the trip. You can make a loop - Colorado Springs - Aspen - Glenwood Springs - Vail - Grand Lake over Trail Ridge Road to Estes Park. By then, the folks in downtown Estes Park will have everything cleaned up. You should be able to travel south on the Peak to Peak Scenic Byway through Nederland and back to I-70 and Denver by way of the Central City Parkway. I do not know of any roadways or bridges washed out at this time along this route. There is a rockslide but road crews will get that cleaned up quickly when the rain stops.

http://www.cotrip.org will give you road closure updates.

I wish we could do that. But we will be in Moab UT at the end of the trip, with Vail on the final day, Tues Sept 24. Our plan is CO Springs on the 17/18, and Estes on the 19/20 which is next Thursday, Fri and Sat. Then to Aspen and then Moab. Should I try to make alternate plans from CO Springs to Estes? Our plan was to acclimated to the altitude there the first couple days, then do Pikes peak and drive the Peak to Peak HWY to Estes Park on Thursday (9/19)

OK. Just checked on things. I obviously need to make other arrangements for the nights we were staying in Estes Park, since I just saw video that it is underwater. What suggestions to you have for lodging near RMNP on Thursday and Friday provided the whole park wont be flooded out?

I should have looked back at your earlier post. I even mapped the "best foliage route" for that trip in my last reply.

As alli and Babalax mentioned, Monday and forward is supposed to be sunny, dry and warm. That will give the folks in Estes Park several days to clean up. I would still do it. All of the town is not flooded. The route by way of Central City Parkway or Golden Gate Canyon Road (link on your other post) should be cleared by the 19th. Just check http://www.cotrip.org as I said above. There are restaurants on higher ground in Estes Park that were not flooded. The Comfort Inn (you were considering) is also on higher ground.

CO Spgs may also have some problems since they have had mudslides/rockslides and damaged roads from areas where the fires have burned. As mentioned, keep checking.

Thanks fv. We have reservations at the stonebrook resort, which is right on the river there. Tried to call tonight and got no answer, so that's certainly not looking good. I will have to do some calling around tomorrow and probably find another place to stay. Thanks for all your help. I will keep checking the road closures. Any other updated information will be very much appreciated!
