 RI with Teenage Girls

Help!

I have never been to the Northeast but will soon be spending a weekend in the CT/RI area with two 13yo girls. Where is a good base of operations to enjoy both classic New England and more modern sights to keep the girls happy? I'd also love to hear hotel recommendations that won't break the bank.

Thanks!

Teenage girls love to hang out around the beaches. Narragansett is a good area for summertime fun. Newport is a great place to spend a weekend as well, but it's on the pricy side. Providence would be the city to stay in for summertime events like WaterFire and shopping. I really don't know much about Connecticut to offer advice but Misquamicut Beach is another fun area. That's located in Westerly, R.I., right near the CT border.

I think you would like Narragansett for a weekend. It has enough dining, shopping and sightseeing, plus about 3 or 4 very nice beaches. I always recommend The Anchor Motel there but it may be tough getting reservations this late.

Oh, and to give you an idea of the distances, Providence is about a 45 minute drive from Narragansett. Newport a little less.

As Will said, the beach areas of Narragansett, Westerly and Middletown/Newport will be great for the girls - plenty of "beach watching" for them, plus the surf is not large, so there is usually very little danger from riptides. All the beaches have plenty of lifeguards.

If you're girls like shopping, the Providence Place Mall downtown is huge and they can spend the better part of a day there if the weather is lousy.

You can spend easily an entire day in Newport seeing the mansions and doing the Cliff Walk.

Classic New England you can go into CT and spend a full day or two at Mystic Village, Mystic Seaport and the Aquarium.

With the limited time you have, that may be your best bet. Mystic has a number of hotels/motels centrally located - go to www.visitmystic.com

i used to take my girls there about 3-4 times a year until they got older (one is now 17).

If your girls like shopping they should try Anya Blu Boutique in Downtown Westerly, RI. I has everything from Jeans to Cute Dresses. They will not be disappointed and the prices are great! Check it out online too @ http://www.anyablu.com
