5 nights in Texas, Austin to San Antonio

Hi Texans, my wife and I are flying to Texas on our way to New Orleans part of our two month USA trip. We fly into Austin and 6 days later are flying out of San Antonio.

This is our basic plan and welcome any tips.

Hire a car ( does one need a car in Austin or is public transport sufficient?)

Where does one recommend to stay in Austin?

Then after two nights in Austin to drive down to San Antonio, stopping in Gruene for a night to go tubbing and have one of the famous BBQ.

Next day to drive down to San Antonio and spend 2 nights there.

Can anyone recommend the best place to stay in SA for a newly married couple in their late 20's?

After reading up on Texas I wish we made more time for this wonderful state.

Thanks

Definitely get a car in Austin! Try to have a sunset dinner at the Oasis on Travis Lake. If you plan to enjoy Sixth Street it may be best to find a hotel that is walking distance.

The best place to stay for a honeymoon would be La Mansion on the riverwalk!

Ditto on the idea to watch the sunset from Oasis, but instead of having dinner, how about just a drink, instead. (Very romantic any way you do it.) If you are up for a once-in-a-lifetime splurge dinner, drive a little bit more to Hudson's on the Bend. The food is a meat-lover's paradise, with venison, wild boar, elk and even rattlesnake.

Last time I was at Hudson's, I had a fantastic dinner that included Elk Wellington. The atmosphere is casual, yet upscale and the service is excellent.

You MUST hit a winery or two on the way to San Antonio. Do not drive down I35, but instead take the backroads shown on this website's map:

You can also eat at the Salt Lick BBQ on the way to San Antonio. The Salt Lick is a personal favorite.

Yeah, tubing!

Hmm, what is your price range for accomodations? The Four Seasons is real popular, but very expensive. (My daughter's daycare offers a night at the Four Seasons at their silent auction every year; it is the most popular offering.) The Four Seasons is also well-located near the bat bridge (Congress Ave.).

Start preparing now by stepping into a sauna every day. The heat and humidity here will surprise you.
