 Ambergris Caye : getting around

I'm trying to decide on a VRBO for the Chrismas holiday. We will be traveling with our children who are young adults in their 20's. Several of the properties are north of town by several miles. I'm wondering if this is too isolated or if there is a good way to get around. We are all bicyclist and would be willing to rent bicycles for travel. Opinions and information would be welcome.

Bicycles would be fine during the day, but there is no lighting for travel at night. Mostly, you would probably use water taxis.

It would be too isolated for me, but I'm a confirmed 'townie', I want to be within walking distance.

There are rentals south of town as well. From there, bikes would be more practical, as would golf carts and regular cabs.

Many people rent north of town, and use the water taxis without any issues. I just prefer my own schedule. And sometimes it's hard to get everyone on the same schedule.

too isolated is subjective. the trail n of town will allow use by golf carts but it depends on recent rainfall as to how far you can go, usually a couple of miles but GC's have been know to go 5 miles or as far as journeys end. the road s of town is paved. we did a vrbo n of town last winter and i prefer a resort with a bar after the vrbo. there is a little grocery about 5 miles n that carries the basics.

PS

www.googlearth.com is a great way to look the place over in a macro kind of way.

My husband and I stayed at Bella Vista last February, it is 2 1/2 miles N of town (about 10 minutes or so by bike) and we walked and rode bikes back and forth. No problem although going North you are going into the breeze. You can take the water taxi at night if you want.

Well even though you are all good on the bikes I would say Rent A Golf Cart. It is only about 290.00US for a week. The roads north of the cut are bad and they are very bumpy and you may even encounter a couple roots and stuff sticking out which have caused a couple of small accidents. Your best way to go is to rent the cart and park in town and use bikes there if you want for an occasion or walk the heart of town a little. Carts Belize has the nicest smoothest golf carts on the island. The prices are pretty much the same and do make reservations since they sell out as well.
