 Visiting Chaing Mai Wats -

This question may sound silly, pls.forgive me for the not knowing, it's our first trip to Chiang Mai.

We would like to visit some wats recommended here and in our guide books (Doi Suthep, Chedi Luang, Phra Singh, U-Mong).

Are these wats intriguing because of their architecture, grounds or interior? I am trying to get a feel how much time should we allocate to visit them. Do you go inside the wat or are you marveling the structure from outside? Are there any opening hours of the wats/their compounds?

thank you.

we went to doi suthep ,which is outside the city,we spent a couple of hours there ,you can go inside much of it ,its a very nice place .

we also went to chedi luang a few times as we got to know a lovely couple who were looking after the temple dogs,we made a donation came back the next day and the lady had made us a lovely cake ,they do a great job.but back on track we walked around the outside and the grounds absorbing the atmosphere ,we went in the evening which leant it a certain atmosphere i think..

Doi Suthep you could probably spend an hour or two there. The others, we spent probably about 1/2 hr -ish at each. For me, it was the architecture , and somewhat the grounds. We visited Chedi Luang, Suan Dok , Jed Yod, Phra Singh, as well as the forementioned Doi Suthep. All of them have very different architecture and I think well worth a visit. We didn't make it to U Mong, but hope to on our next trip here in December. Wat Suan Dok actually has a class I think it was on certain days, but I can't remember. You can go inside that one. We visited Phra Singh after dark, so not sure if you can go in that one or not, but it was quite pretty lit up after dark. Think I would have appreciated it more during the day though.. or at dusk/dawn.

You can easily visit Doi Suthep as well as all the above wats in a day at quite a leisurely pace. We did and even visted Tiger Kingdom for lunch. :)

I'm sure you can do the wats in about 15 mins or even less if you wanted to really.. however I'm a photo fanatic so I had to take photos at every angle 500 times ( ok slight exaggeration lol). With the exception of Doi Suthep of course.. that one really does take an hour or two.

Doi Suthep is a must. Lovely views back over Chiang Mai and stunning wat on top of the hill. Also a nice cafe to have a break right on top.

Buy a good map and have a wander around the old city area. You can spend a couple of hour walking around and wander in and out of lots of temples. Many different styles of temples just in this area alone.

We love the Nancy Chandler Map because if has eating, shopping and sights marked directly on to the map. You can buy it at the airports or in the bookshops up around the Tha Phae Gate area of the old city. Or you can order on line from her web page.
