Hotel Law
Save

Hi everyone,

I'm planning a trip to Vietnam with my boyfriend this summer. I'm American, and he's a Vietnamese citizen currently living in the US. While researching hotels, I came upon this law:

Under Vietnamese law, a guest who is not a Vietnamese citizen cannot share a room with a Vietnamese citizen without proof of marriage to each other. Otherwise, a second room must be booked.

I've done some research (mainly google searches and reading message boards), and I've learned that this is mainly to prevent prostitution. All the information I can find pertains to couples where the woman is Vietnamese and the man is another nationality, but I can't find anything useful for my current situation.

Given that the white girl is clearly not a Vietnamese prostitute (and that hopefully no one would think my boyfriend was a male prostitute!), do you think we'll have any trouble sharing a room?

Thanks for your help!

I would like to think you would be okay but you may have a problem with some hotels, government run and big 5 star hotels still apply that law. Call ahead to book or a local travel agency can advise you. Don't think it will be a major problem, enjoy.

Thanks for your help everyone. I guess I'll call ahead and inquire before booking anything.

westendgaz - I saw that thread before, but I was curious if things will be different for my situation, since it's my boyfriend who's Vietnamese. Hopefully we won't have a problem!

I hope so too Beth, but it's wise to check first.

Email the hotel there are some hotels that will not allow it, so better to avoid any embarrassing situations at checkin. Doesn't matter if the person is male or female who is the viet citizen, law applies equally.

I think if you both are on the hotel reservation then for the most part u won't have an issue.

There is male prostitutes in Vietnam so yes it even applies to you! ;)

the law definitely applies both ways, I have a friend who got kicked out of a couple of hotels & then houses that her and her Vietnamese bf tried to rent. But at smaller hotels and guesthouses you shouldn't have a problem.

Lot of bigger hotels not an issue either: example big hotel in halong no way, but same name brand in Nha Trang no problem. Email and explain situation the hotel will appreciate your thoughtfulness.

Even in the smaller hotels and guest houses it isn't unknown for the police to make a late night visit. A pair of them came to my hotel room in Hanoi at 11 pm last November. They even looked in the wardrobe!
