Hong Kong Forum: Marco Polo Hong Kong or Salisbury for Harbour view

Marco Polo Hong Kong or Salisbury for Harbour view

We only have 2 nights in Hong Kong as a stopover (April 2010) but we're looking for a hotel that's clean, comfortable, and importantly has great views.

These hotels offer harbour view rooms for our stay for 3300HKD (Marco Polo) and 2400HKD (Salisbury).

Can anyone let me know if the Marco Polo is worth the extra? or am I just paying for facilities that I am unlikely to use (with only 2 days we'll be sightseeing/shopping etc). We do enjoy some room comforts but don't require high levels of pampering.

Or can someone offer a better alternative - we don't really want to exceed 3300HKD but are happy to pay that amount if neded. Thanks

I suggest you stay at the Salisbury if you can get a harbour view.

I assume the price you have quoted is for the 2 nights so i would use the saving to have a really nice meal or two. The rooms at the Salisbury are not huge, but with the exception of the major hotels most are not but they are clean and they are very comfortable. I have stayed in the MP Hong Kong and i reslly do not think that it is worth the extra expense.

At the end of the day, you are there for just 2 nights, so how much time do you intend to spend in your room ?

Have a look at Harbour Grand, with very good harbour view. Check their rates :

Thanks for the quick responses.

Tin - looks lovely but comes to 6000HKD for 2 nights so a lot more expensive.

steve_ben - the price is for 2 nights and your comments and comparison appreciated.

Thanks

It may even be a bit too early to book now, as I noticed that some hotels on third party sites haven't yet released their prices for April yet. But, then again, it never harms to book ahead, if you can grab a great deal!

I would also opt for the YMCA Salisbury hotel, but, you certainly won't be getting the "luxuries" available at the Marco Polo Hotel. For me, price (and location, which, in this case, both are fine) is more important than "luxury", so, I'd certainly go for the Salisbury. Also, it does have largely very positive reviews around here and is recommended a lot, so, I wouldn't have too many concerns, unless, you really want those "extras".

I don't know which dates you're looking at in April, but, take a look at www.asiatravel.com/ for hotels. If you're in HK before the 11th April, prices at Tin's suggestion of the Harbour Grand for a Superior Harbour View room is $1188HKD per night, Deluxe Harbour View Room is $1298HKD per night, and Grand Deluxe is $1463HKD per night. After the 11th, the prices shoot up, unfortunately. The "downside" to the Harbour Grand (mentioned quite often in the TA reviews) is the location, which is more residential than tourist-ey, which some don't like (but, I don't mind at all). However, given that you're only a few minutes walking distance away from the MTR station, you honestly won't have any problems in getting around.

Good luck with your planning and have an AMAZING time in HK! :)

We spent 5 days at the Salisbury and, yes, the location cannot be beat, the views from the harbor view rooms are outstanding, and all is comfortable, clean and nice - a very good option that won't break the bank.

In our experience, the priced they offer directly are the same as what you can get through websites - no value whatsoever going through Wotif... And by dealing directly with them, you can sometimes have other options (ex: we didn't know that we could get a rollaway bed put in a regular room). They tend to publish their seasonal rates pretty early on (2-3 months ahead of time at least), so for them there is no value in waiting until the last minute to book.

The two hotels are completely different.

The harbourview rooms of MPHK is unbeatable in the view. I love this hotel's harbourview. Breathtaking, esp at night.

YMCA- great hotel, basic, and the harbourview is good, if you get the upper floors.

It depends what you want, a more luxurious atmosphere (MPHK), or a basic hotel with no frills. (YMCA)

For myself, I prefer the MPHK if I can afford it. It's connected to a great huge shopping.

Many love the YMCA. I personally feel it doesn't feel like a hotel at all, more like a community center with lodging.

Both are fine, just what you really want.

I disagree with the last post, but can't compare the YMCA Salisbury to other hotels in HK (but I can to loads of hotels elsewhere).

The entrance/lobby to the YMCA is now being renovated; last summer it was alright and did feel like a very nice community center. Other than that, it is a very nice 3-star or 4-star hotel (I'd rate it on par with a Hilton for example). Think luxury IKEA, not the Ritz. Clean design, everything very well kept up, fruit basket offered, gorgeous views (the same as the Peninsula at maybe 1/5th the price). We stayed at the Novotel in Beijing last summer too - the Novotel had bigger rooms; while the YMCA Salisbury's rooms were more attractive and maybe even abit cleaner.

Tom11, understood that you liked the YMCA Salisbury very much, as many others also in this forum and website indicate.

What is it you disagree with about my reply? That MPHK is in the same category comparable with YMCA ? I think not. That YMCA is as beautiful and elegant as MPHK ? I think not.

YMCA is clean, well located, good service, and cheaper than MPHK in price per night. Harbourview is nice (as I have said) if your rooms are high enough.

Like I said, both hotels are nice in their own ways, but I stand firm with my statement, MPHK is NOT in the same category as YMCA Salisbury.

No matter how popular YMCA Salisbury is, it's still fits the description of "special lodging" as opposed to a 4 or 5 star hotel.

I don't think MPHK is as nice as it used to be, but still, its atmosphere and reputation is higher than YMCA Salisbury as a luxurious hotel, at least in my opinion.

TY

all...I think the native feels the YMCA is well worth the price;

while MP HK is a different catagory like apples and oranges and location ,location , location..

BTW, they do not advertise, but Cathay Pacific will arrange all including transport and food and basic rooms for the YMCA if 1st trip very useful...downside, no upgrade until we get there since the airline does not tell the hotel until 3 days before arrival,

Cheers!

Sorry Katetam - no offence meant.

I just wanted to say that, from our experience, the YMCA is not a basic hotel (by basic, I mean maybe a 1-2 star hotel). You are right - it is not high luxury, but neither is it rudimentary in any way - except for the feeling in part of the lobby, it is equivalent to a very good 3-star if not 4 star hotel. Myself, I'd rate rooms and services on par with (if not better than) Hiltons, Marriotts, Novotel/Sofitels and the such I've stayed at in many countries. It may not compare with the luxury of the Marco Polo, but it is nevertheless a very good option.
