ok this is peru so who knows what type of inspections were held to come up with these charges, and the article notes some agencies have filed appeals, but i still think this is good info to share if you want to be a responsible traveler
This is a daily newspaper in Cusco:
www.diarioelsoldecusco.com/paglocales1.htm
No date but it headlined today, visit http://www.diarioelsoldecusco.com
For the non-spanish speakers, the article basically says:
The following tour operators have been fined for not paying minimum wage (S/163 for 4 days) to their porters:
United Mice Tour Operator
El Dorado Expeditons
South American Sites (on appeal)
Camping Tours
Colibrí Travel S.A.C.
Transtawa
Peruvian Higland Travel
Jenly Adventures
Gregory Tours
Base Camp
Eco Andes Adventures (on appeal)
Kintu Expeditions (on appeal)
Cóndor Travel (on appeal)
Andean Adventure
The fines were between S/1700 - S/10,200.
Xochitl would know better than me - should this just be taken with a grain of salt? Do these companies always get fined for this stuff?
I hope this doesn't start a long chain of people saying they took these tour companies and they were great, happy porters, etc, I'm sure they offer great tours, but tourists pay so much to do the Inca Trail so I just thought this would be good info to pass around
