The best way to get to Albania from UK!

How about a flight to Corfu & then cross

Fly to Dubrovnik & then drive (cross border?)

Direct flights from uk are quite expensive to Tirana!

The budget airlines seem to arrive a fair way away! Brindisi?

Suggestions welcome

Thanks

The direct flight is the best way. Not necessarily the cheapest, but the best. You could try to combine two low cost flights using Ryan Air or Easy Jet to connect at an airport served by Belle Air into Tirana. They fly to a whole bunch of places in Italy as well as Leige in Brussels.

The next best option is to fly into Bari or Brindisi and take the ferry over. Makes for a long trip though and a complicated transfer from airport to ferry terminal.

Dubrovnik is at least five hours from the Albanian border.

If you are intereted in southern Albania, fly into Corfu and take the ferry to Saranda. It's a quick trip. You could also fly into Thessaloniki or Janine in Greece and get a bus up from there.

Best bet is to cut the complications and buy a direct ticket to Tirana. Save time and aggravation..

We went last month to Albania, so here are my thoughts. Booking only about three weeks ahead...

1. Don't book three weeks ahead, if you can book ages ahead BA or Malev should be cheaper.

2. I was surprised at the cost of flights to Corfu.

3. If you live near Heathrow, BA flies from LHR so it's worth considering for the reduced cost getting to the airport and hassle.

3. We flew Malev via Budapest, providing an interesting extra leg to the holiday.

3.1 Malev fly from Gatwick or Heathrow, and Heathrow only cost us £10/person more.

3.2 We had to wait the evening in Budapest airport for the transfer. It should have been half the evening, but as delays often build up during the day, there was a 90 minute delay.

4. While we were there (first 2 weeks of September), there were plenty of ferries between Brindisi and Durres or Vlore, but I think they might be expensive.

5. If there's a number of you going and you have a car consider driving. The Germans and Austrians do. No idea of the costs though.

Regards,

Nigel

Thanks for replies.

Actually flying to Dubrovnik appeals but car hire companies may not be too happy about taking the car to Albania - we had probs with Avis when we tried to get to Albania from Greece last Summer - found the Greeks very anti Albania!! In the end used public transport in Albania but found there were people there driving cars from all over Europe.

I want to return to Albania but with a car next time!

Thanks
