Zadar or Pula???

I'm planning a holiday to Croatia at the end of July. Been to the Southern Croatia before, Dubrovnik, Korcula etc. but want to try the North this time. There are flight options to both Zadar and Pula. Which would you recommend for a 10 day break at the end of July? Interested in good scenery, island hopping, nice restaurants, old towns and activities such as kayaking/rafting. Not planning on hiring a car but it is an option.

Many thanks

Lynne

Hi Lynne,

I would recommend Pula. Pula is North that you wont to descover. Hospitality service is better in Istria than in Croatia south..

Around Pula there are numerous small medieval towns on top of the hills, each one with its one unique story. There are lot of great but still unpretencious restaurants.

With renting a car will be much easier

Hope I helped

I am the opposite and would recommend Zadar. It has numerous national parks nearby, a beautiful old town, islands and some great restaurants.

Thanks for the replies. Any suggestions for best islands to visit from Zadar. We hired a small boat in Korcula for a day last time to go out round the islands and would like to do something similar.

I am not sure how you would go about hiring a small boat.

Dugi Otok is an island which unfortunately I haven't been to yet but is supposed to be really nice. I am definitely going to make time for it next time I'm in Zadar. There is the Kornati Islands which is a national park and there a heaps of tours you can take to see them. I quite like the village of Preko on Otok Ugljan. It's a lovely little village to chill out in for a couple of hours and the view over to Zadar with the mountains in the background is really quite something. I never get sick of that view. Give the island of Pasman a miss.

I was just thinking about the boat hire. Maybe the tourist information in Zadar could help you with that.

Tough decision... Both cities are beautiful, very interesting, with famous history. But, both are too big, too crowdie for me. I would stay in smaller towns in the neighbourhood - e.g. Fažana near Pula and Biograd near Zadar, but that's just me, I like peace and quiet.

If you decide to rent a car, and after seeing the mere south of Croatia, I would suggest to see the mere north -- Istria. Its inland with little hilly villages like Grožnjan, Motovun or Bale are just adorable. And you can rent a boat from Fažana and sail along Brijuni islands, one of our national parks.

On the other hand, Kornati Islands, in Zadar archipelago, also a national park, are more interesting for sailing.

How old are you? I am curious what will you decide... ;-)
