We are planning to travel to Panama for one week. What are the guidelines regarding car seats and such. Is there anywhere we could maybe rent one? Also, what places to you all recommend for us to go with a 15 month old! Thanks you in advance! =0)

Hi Joshie girl,

The law does not require child safety seats but you can get them at the major car rentals IF you book IN ADVANCE.

I know Budget Rent-a-car has them for sure at $ 3 a day a some of our guests recently used them.

As to places to visit... Summit Gardens on the way to Gamboa and the Smithsonian center a Isla Naos (Amador Causeway) come to mind. Bicycling on the Amador Causeway (big bike rental).

Other than that, I don't think a 15-year old will appreciate much of Panama's many attractions.

I WOULD recommend carrying your child in a backpack type of carrier; we don't have many stroller-friendly sidewalks here.

Do you want to hit the beach for a few days? If so, we just stayed at Playa Blanca, which was incredibly kid-friendly. It has wading pools of different depths, including one that would probably be perfect for a fifteen month old kid.

Panama Viejo, with all the ruins. Our toddler daughter loved ruins at that age.

Good point about the front pack. Or a backpack for a heavier kid. We hardly saw any strollers around the tourist sights. We took our fifteen month old daughter around Glacier National Park in a backpack and she loved it. Anything outdoors will be great for the kiddo, from the embankment near the Plaza Francia to the national parks.

Probably fifteen months is too young, but you could ask Anne Gordon of Embera Village Tours if the river trip with your toddler is feasible. Your toddler will have lots of playmates at the village if you can make the trip.

You might want to bring your own car seat. We did to Panama (but we were visiting friends who have their own car). But we have also obtained car seats at car rental agencies.

Have fun! Fifteen months is a great age to travel. Get 'em started young.
