Please recommend best places to eat at Gamboa and Causeway.

We're planning on spending the morning in Gamboa (boat tour and bird watching) and then the evening/late afternoon at the Locks and the Causeway.

Can you please recommend a place to have lunch while in or around the Gamboa Resort and then a place to have a nice evening dinner at the Causeway?

Thank you!

There are no restaurants "around" Gamboa - it is quite isolated, but they will show you different options on where to eat within the development. Don't get too excited, however, the food is marginal to say the least and not inexpensive.

The best place at Gamboa is down by the lake. The restaurant is part of the resort and as already mentioned, very expensive IMHO. It was where Pierce Brosnan got very frisky during lunch with his British Embassy "friend" in The Tailor of Panama. Great views but the food was less than marginal for my taste.

Causeway has tons of choices - my favorite is Mi Ranchito but Pencas is also pretty fun if there is a band playing.

On the Causeway, I think you'd most enjoy the two at the end: Alberto's and Leños y Carbon. Both have excellent food, and views out over the bay to Panama City (which the two that Borracho mentioned do not).

Experts, is the restaurant at the Mira Flores Locks open for lunch? We enjoyed our dinner there, sitting on the terrace to watch the ships come and go. We took photos of crews and they took photos of us. The food? Better than at Gamboa's restaurant at the lake with the crocodiles and probably more expensive, too. But wow what fun.

It is open for lunch. There is a buffet and you can order ala carte. I agree that the food there is better than at Gamboa (but not much) and the view is well worth it. The only problem I've had with lunch there is it is how hot it gets sitting outside. The view more than makes up for it for me but then I'm a tropical hedonist.

The only other thing to be aware of is that mid-day is a very quiet time for boats transitting Miraflores - usually there are none between 11am-ish and 2:30pm-ish... so you might want to schedule a later lunch to catch the first few afternoon transits...

Cheers,

Andrew

Interesting about lunch-time having very little traffic at Miraflores. That had been high on my list of places to eat! Do you mean any traffic at all? Or just a lack of cruise ships and/or the big cargo ships?

I agree that midday is iffy, but I'd narrow the window a bit from Andrew's suggestion; I did see ships -- big ones -- on a couple visits around 1pm.

If you want to test it yourself, look at the Miraflores webcam around midday for several days to see what's happening: http://www.pancanal.com/eng/photo/camera-java.html?cam=HiDef

(The time zone in Panama is GMT-5.00.)
