My two teens (aged 14 & 16) and I will be traveling to Antiqua in November for 5 weeks. Our intent it to take Spanish classes for 3 weeks then do some volunteer work for 2 weeks. It will be their first time in Guatemala and I would like to make it a wonderful experience for them. They are very active and athletic.

Questions:

- suggestions for schools

- is it necessary to pre-book, or should we 'walk in'?

- lodging... I'm not sure that a 'home stay' is necessary, we are very disaplined about studying and communicating. What are others thoughts, and suggestions for inexpensive lodging.... most are $50 per night which I feel is high.

- mountain bike rentals, does anyone have a contact number or does mountain biking? My boys are avid downhill riders, and can be particular about courses and bikes.

- is there kiteboarding on the lake? Does the wind blow there in November/December?

- Getting from Guatemala city to Antiqua, what are your suggestions?

Thank you for any suggestions...

The Above website might help with some of your questions.. There is a magazine for tourists that is given away free at many locations in Antigua.. their website is

http://www.revuemag.com

That might also help.. There are many websites about Guatemala and Antigua.. good luck on your searching.. Volcano climbing might also be an adventure for your boys.. Many of these day trips can easily be booked while in Antigua..

Good Luck

Hi there: I recommed you visit www.guatemalaturistica.com. On the home page, where it says Guatemala Turistica, click on hoteles. That takes you to a general list of hotels, which includes, rates, telephone numbers and e-mail addresses in some cases. For some reason its only in spanish. Antigua can be found under "Sacatepequez". Also www.enjoyguatemala.com has several pages on mountain bike tours. horse back riding tours, volcanos etc.

Good luck.

I am going to San Jose el Viejo (www.sanjoseelviejo.com this summer to study Sapnish. I have had several friends and profs go there because it is geared more to families and adults rather than back packers. You can rent casitas by the week - which we are doing because we have heard such great things. They have a pool and tennis court too. Students can also opt for home stay, or stay in another hotel. This school is so well known that you need to call before hand and book - they will also pick you up in Guatemala City and take you to the school! The school will also tell you where to get a cell phone, get your laundry done, rent bike, and book tours.

They have been GREAT to deal with - we are going for 7 weeks!
