I have read your other post as well. It is better and economical to have the same car and driver for the complete trip. By hiring separate cars and drivers for each sector, you may pay more and will not feel security and comfort with strange drivers on each day.

I have checked for packages from inspirekerala.com, is this a known company. They have packages for car hire. Are these guys reasonable
Check the Cochin classified and get rates from a few people and decide. There are a lot of tour companies in Kerala and classifying them is a bit difficult.
I was in Kerala recently, and I think I stand divided on hiring a car (all through) or not. It also depends on what age group you belong to, and who you are traveling with.
Kerala has a fairly dependable local bus system, way better than ST buses we have in Mumbai. I found them perfectly comfortable. But then, I also come from the vein of travel, where I like the adventure.
Which month are looking at visiting India? Have you outlined a route? I can possibly give you more specific advise on each travel leg then.
My trip, I took a rented car between Cochin Airport to Thekkady (I was short on time). Within Thekkady, hiring a rickshaw was very easy and not expensive at all. From Thekkady, we took a bus to Allepy... which I thought was perfect, fast, reliable and inexpensive. We ended our trip in Varkala and took a bus from Allepy to Varkala too.
