 Sri Lanka is Safe :-)

Didn't want to start on a wrong foot with this post, hence the optimistic subject line. We're doing a tour of Sri Lanka next February and wondered what the general safety was like their? We have travelled to the USA, Jamaica, Cuba, etc, and my feeling is Sri Lanka is probably ok for tourists to generally walk about. Usual common sense would prevail as it would do here in the UK. I've never heard of any tourist problems with regards to the Tamil problems.

Hi Weatherman,

Yes , Sri Lanka is safe .... As you've said, obviously you don't do anything silly, like walking down dark alleys, in the back streets at night, but generally, walking out in the evening to restaurants, bars , etc is not a problem.

Even during the war, the tourist areas have always been safe . In fact , much safer than the other places that you've mentioned.

Hello Weatherman2

Sri Lanka is a safe place to visit. I have travelled around the country with just my daughter for company and have never felt in the slightest bit threatened. I doubt that I would feel like that in places like Jamaica ....

The people in Sri Lanka are kind, gentle and warmhearted and you can walk around without any worries.

With regard to the recent conflict; this did not affect tourists nor the areas frequented by them. There are still areas in the far north of the country and parts of the east where travel is not advised, but I very much doubt that you would be heading here anyway.

Book your holiday with confidence. February is a wonderful month to see Sri Lanka and I will be back there myself then too. Have a great time.

Sue
