Anything must be better than spending 8 hours at Narita:
- spend some time at a airport hotel just outside the terminal
- travel into Tokyo on a flying visit. The train takes 60 minutes to central Tokyo so if you can clear customs quickly (not so easy and times can vary greatly and then not worry about luggage) then possible. Landing at 8.40am the earliest into Tokyo would be say 11am and then you need to be on the 2.30 train back to Narita (arrive 3.30pm and then check through customs 30 minutes so air side around 4pm for boarding at say 4.40). Is it worth all the rush and connecions - a bit doubtful if you look at the times above ?
Kidsdad,
How about going to Naritasan Shinshoji Temple?
This is a famous temple in two aspects.
1. Many people go to this temple for Hatsumode. Hatsumode is a custom to visit a temple on New Years Day to prey for the happiness of the new year. Number of visitors to Naritasan is in the best ten list in whole Japan.
2. When we buy a new car, we go to temples/shrines in order that the priests prey for the safety of driving. Naritasan is the most famous temple for this safety preying.

you do not have enough time to go to Tokyo but you can go to the town of Narita. Check if there are still tours to there from the airport, or you can go on your own.
