 Hokkaido in January

Hi, We are travelling to Hokkaido in January next year with ur 10 year old daughter. She is hoping to see snow for the first time. We have a friend living in Takikawa and another in Asahikawa. We wondered what is going to be on in and around Sapporo at this time as we arrive 24th January for 5 days. Too early for the snow festival but would like to see any activities that could be happening at this time. Any susggestions? regards Julie

Around Sapporo there are many winter activities to try out- snowshoeing and maybe even try some skiing- there are ski areas in Sapporo. I think some places have horse driven sleigh rides if you and your daughter are interested in that- the northern horse park and maybe the Sapporo historical village do those. As Amanda said in your other post there are lots of little festivals and events on around the area. The Shikotsuko ice festival starts at the end of January so you might just be in time to see that- I can't seem to find the dates for 2010 at the moment so I don't have details on that. And in Otaru they will be preparing for their snow gleaming festival- the local people make the ice and snow sculptures.

I hope that gives you some ideas

If your friends live there, you could ask them to find out if there are festivals going on. There are usually snow festivals/ice festivals happening from late January to February throughout Hokkaido.

Within Sapporo, definitely visit Ishiya Chocolate Factory. The tour itself is forgettable so skip it, but there is a nice park outside with mini European houses that are quite cute and worth some pictures, especially when it's half-buried in the snow. The souvenir shop is also very nice. You don't have to purchase or buy a ticket to enjoy these two areas.

The link is only in Japanese. You can get there by taking Tozai subway line to Miyanozawa Station. Right at the exit of the station is a big sign so you just follow it. It's about a 5-7 minute walk.

My friends do not have email. We write letters the old fashioned way and I am trying to plan the trip now. I have written but return mail is taking a long time. It looks like we may change the dates too due to flight times. Anyhow we shall know more about that in the next month. Thanks for your reply.
