Vince-

I would bring a can of Raid! Sorry, I'm just kidding, but there are Palmetto's there so you may see some. Usually they're not in the home-which would freak me out too- but you may see them outside in a carport area, etc.

Hate to tell you, but I have seen the Palmetto in OBX too...just no way to tell if the rental house has them. They are part of charm of the area!

Now I freak out when I see snakes, which happens everytime we go, up and down the coast, north, south, and inbetween!

Remind your sister-in-law and wife that they are bigger than any bug they will see-good luck! :)

I have never seen palmetto bugs anywhere in NC, but seen plenty in FL - both inside and outside.

I think you're safe in NC

We go to the Outer Banks each year and have never seen one. We have tons of them in South Carolina. I moved here from the Northeast ten years ago and I would freak out when I would see them on a deck where I was sitting. Now, I just stomp on them - it's no big deal. Just a shock until you understand that they are very common in the south.

As posted before, they are here on the OBX. If you have not seen them, your rental company probably sprays regularly.
