Yo all you Longhorns! We're bringing our daughter (soon to be a Longhorn!) to Austin to tour UT in April. Want to stay someplace close to UT & downtown ambience. Any suggestions? I found the Marriott Residence Inn downtown, but it looks to be a couple of blocks away from the optimum.

Doubletree Club Hotel

Address: 1617 N. IH-35

Phone: 512-479-4000

URL: http://www.doubletreehotels.com

This hotel is right by the university, and handy to get in and out. It's not necessary to get on IH-35. Price is usually very good, it's been remodeled. Lots of UT parents use it.

The Brava House has a good location and gets great recommendations for a B&B if that appeals.

Downtown will be higher, you'll pay to park your car but then it's good fun to walk from any of the downtown hotels to shopping, eating, etc.

You can go to http://www.austintexas.org for the visitor's web site and search accomodations there by location. Definitely request their free packet and get the good maps. They'll save you lots of time when you arrive.

And we'd appreciate knowing about your trip after you return home?

If you want to stay close to UT, B&Bs are your best bet. My husband is a faculty member and we are always arranging for his colleagues to stay nearby.

Your best be may be the Hampton Suites downtown. Our neighbors put up family at the Hampton. It is well-located and the price is very good considering the central location.

The new Hilton has a great location near 6th St. Yet after seeing 6th St. in all it's nighttime glory, you may reconsider sending your daughter here (but she, in turn, will then REALLY want to attend!).

If you want to treat yourselves (but I doubt it since college tuition tends to kill the "splurge urge"), the Driskill Hotel or the Four Seasons have great reputations.

take a visit to Congress Avenue, just across Town Lake and the hike and bike trail (you could pay your respects to the Stevie Ray Vaughn statue) & up the hill.

Austin has a very outdoor/active healthy lifestyle culture.

Congress Avenue can offer someinteresting shopping and some good restaurants - Amy's ice cream, Vespaio (fancy & excellent italian), Homeslice Pizza, El Sol y La Luna...Jo's coffee

Before you head back to Ohio (where i grew up) be sure to try some real Tex-Mex.

there are some hotels here too, but probably best to be near campus. You can take the trolley, called the Dillo for free to visit around town.
