I can only imagine what Austin is like when in May when UT has graduation. Has anyone been through it? Where's a good place to stay that is reasonable?

My mother-in-law visited during graduation since I had the good (or not so good) fortune of giving birth the week before. It was horrible finding a room for her. Book as far ahead as possible.

Questions: Do you want to be close to campus? Would you be interested in a B&B? There are several nice B&Bs near campus, although you may end up hearing the graduation party in the frat/sorority/apartment building next door.

When our family visits, we put them up in the Northcross Suites north of downtown. They love staying there since it is a real suites hotel (yep, separate living room and kitchen) and a hot/cold buffet breakfast is included.

not sure what your budget is like, but if you would like a bed & breakfast that is close to the campus but in a charming neighborhood, consider the Woodburn House in Hyde Park- http://www.woodburnhouse.com - we had friends stay there recently with fabulous results

and I think you're wise to start early- we just went thru this for our daughter's graduation in another state (CO) and were very grateful we stayed somewhere close; it eliminated all the traffic headaches to/ from the campus area, which allowed us more time to relax into the festivities over the weekend - and in Austin, the traffic can be a hassle so eliminating that issue is a big plus
