Does anyone know a good restaurant for a group of 100 within a couple of miles of downtown. A number of the places we have talked to do not take reservations or want $20+ a person. We're looking for something more like $15 a person or less not including drinks.

Thanks!

no idea if its big enough but you call iron works bbq and see if they can have a group that large, if you want bbq. its close to downtown. moonshine would probably have space, although it will be more expensive. or rudy's for bbq. its cheap & good and can probably handle a group that size, but further from downtown. if you want mexican there is iron cactus or rio grande. or check out dona emilias. i am bad at judging restaurant sizes. do you have a food type preference? are you looking to rent out an entire restaurant? and when you said a couple of miles to downtown did you really mean walking distance? if not you can get almost anywhere in austin in a couple miles!

I would check out Threadgills. Usually live music, menu prices from 8.95-14.95. For the size of the party you have, you may want to consider Stubbs BBQ.

Yikes! I've been involved in many group dinners for that size and think you're going to have a hard time. Restaurants do not want to seat 100 people for a myriad of reasons. They also like to charge extra for serving a group.

The best deal we found for dinner was at Z Tejas and even then it wasn't cheap. It just was cheaper and more accommodating than the other places, and we also got a private room. I also agree that Iron Works may be a possible solution. At Iron Works you get in line and order your food, then sit down. The only problem, though, is that the people at the front of the line will already have eaten by the time the last folks get through the door. Same issue with eating at a restaurant if you cannot reserve ahead of time.

Thinking Bar-B-Que but unfortunately not a few miles from downtown I recommend Salt Lick. The have a huge facility and could serve family style. It's also in a dry county so its BYOB could save some bucks there. Again not close to downtown, transportation would probably be an issue.

What about Schultz's Beer Garden or Stubbs???

You might consider Cannoli Joe's immediately sw of downtown. http://www.cannolijoes.com/information.htm

It's Italian buffet and they could easily accomodate 100. Saturday dinner is $15.99

But by the time you tip.....?

Don't overlook Luby's cafeteria's located around town. Fast, inexpensive service.

I second Sholtz', although I know their prices just increased dramatically. Another option might be Nuevo Leon, they even have a catering menu online with several options under $20. Good local place, big space, really close to downtown with a lot of parking. http://www.nuevoleoninaustin.com/restaurant.htm

Scholz's Beer Garden is a great idea. They can do a private banquet room for y'all. Or the Salt Lick (yummers!), but you will need to drive.

I would not show up at Scholz's without calling ahead or reserving a banquet room, even though it is huge. Scholz's is very very popular with groups such as yours. Last time I was there, two large parties took up the entire place.

Believe me, you do not want to just go into a restaurant without calling ahead to see if they can accommodate you, even if it is a cafeteria. It will not have enough kitchen help to put your food out all once. I work with an organization that hosts a luncheon for 80+ every month and boy oh boy it's tough to do. Sometimes we rent a non-restaurant venue and then hire a caterer, it's that difficult. Also, many restaurants will nickel and dime you for every little thing.
