Where to Stay close to UT and downtown

Where to Stay close to UT and downtown

I will be visiting at the end of march. I am looking for a relatively cheap hotel that may be close to UT law and downtown. I am really unfamiliar with the area, so help is appreciated. Never been to TX before, so will probably try to see most of austin. May have a car, but if I could use public transportation that would be great. Probably looking for a cheaper hotel, wont be in it as much, but would obviously like it to be clean and safe.

Thanks in advance.

I highly recommend the San Jose on South Congress or the Austin motel. You are a little further away from UT (5 miles), but you are on the bus line. If you want to get a good feel for Austin, this is THE place to be. You are right in the middle of great "Austiny" restaurants and shops and there is great music right there! If you want to the other route, there is a Days Inn, Courtyard and Hampton in on IH-35 within a mile of the University. Have fun!

La Quinta Inn is on 11th St. It would be a bit of a hike to UT's Law School and rates start around $129 on their site. There is a Double Tree that would probably work better on 15th St. http://doubletree1.hilton.com/en_US/dt/hotel/AUSFLDT-Doubletree-Guest-Suites-Austin-Texas/index.do

Then there is a Motel 6 which is very cheap on I-35 by campus. There is a location that says it is on UT's campus (Austin Central-South Univ of Texas #118), but it's a few miles away and not in the greatest neighborhood.

If your primary focus is UT you would be better off staying further north. While the South Congress Motel is a lovely place surrounded by many things to do, the locations further north would put you a bit closer.

The UT Law School site has info about it's location and shuttles that run close by - http://www.utexas.edu/law/about/

You should check out UT's new hotel and conference center, located at the south end of campus on MLK, sorta across the street from the Bob Bullock Museum.

Not sure about the rates -- definitely won't be "relatively cheap" -- but the location cannot be beat. You can walk easily to downtown.

When is "end of March"? If you are anywhere close to March 13-22, you may find it difficult to find a room close to downtown- that is SXSW Week.

Thanks for all of the replies. I will look into your suggestions. I will be coming in the 29/30, so thankfully will shouldn't be as busy.

I guess it really comes down to what you consider "cheap." I was able to get a room at the Doubletree on 15th Street through priceline.com for $69 one weekend before I moved to Austin. You want to give Priceline a try if you are having trouble finding something within your price range otherwise.

There is no place close to UT Law, but I understand that UT Business opened a conferance center that has rooms. Not sure how far away that would be.

I ended up booking the Downtown Hilton Garden Inn on I35 for $79. Couldn't find anything else in my price range. Taking the shuttle to the hotel, and will take a cab or bus to UT. It looks nice enough, and can't complain about the price. Plus seems to be in walking distance of many things.
