AUSTIN in October: I can't walk... Please help us plan FUN!

My husband and I have already booked flights and reserved a b&b in central Austin. Help! I have a swollen toe and can't walk (temporarily). Our trip is soon...October 2009.

We were planning a more active trip, with walking in the hill country, lots of walking in general. But right now I can barely hobble to the bathroom! :-[

I need to plan some non-activities that don't involve walking! I can probably hobble from the rental car into a restaurant or pub...or go for a scenic drive. If my toe improves I might be able to stand in a bookstore for example... Walking makes my toe problem worse. (Yes I'm seeing a doctor.)

We're interested in the Austin music scene. We are in our early 50's, and we like nature, music, locally owned eateries with healthy & creative menus, including ethnic foods...bookstores...

Music: I love Celtic bluegrass, American bluegrass, and Irish Trad music. My husband prefers rock music but if the musicians are really good, he enjoys any type of music. We don't want to feel like we're the only grammy & grampy in the pub or club! An audience of mixed ages would be fun. We like any type of lively music with a good beat...as long as the musicians are great. Listening to a quiet balad by someone with an amazing voice is also a perfect moment... (-: Listening to salsa music is also fun, although I can't dance with this toe... (Don't know how to salsa anyway!)

Any suggestions for some "nonactivities" would be appreciated!

I'm giving you our "Grandpa Cannot Walk" itinerary:

1. Zilker Zephyr (train) around Zilker Park (if the park reopens before your visit). Can you hobble about 100 feet in one outing? Have your hubby drop you off closest to the train station, near the playscape and Barton Springs clubhouse. You can see a small part of Zilker Park, especially along Town Lake.

(ONLY if the park reopens after the ACL Mudfest)

2. Margs at the Oasis. Overlooks Lake Travis. A drive out of town (which would be fine in your case), but an impressive view.

3. LBJ Ranch. I believe now you do a self-drive tour around the ranch. (When Lady Bird was alive, only park service vans were allowed.) Lovely drive to the ranch and fascinating tour. We always get a big kick out of seeing the descendants of LBJ's herd of prize winning cattle. Lovely drive out to this part of Hill Country.

You can combine this with a bit of wine tasting. Or do the wine tasting alone:

Gruene Hall on a Sat or Sun afternoon should have seating and great live music.

Whole Foods flagship store has electric carts and is a fun place to explore - go hungry.

Most of the music venues in Austin are not sitter friendly. Afternoon shows will probably be better for that. Pick up a copy of the Chronicle for the latest music listings.

Museums would also at least have wheel chairs.
