We are 40-somethings women bringing our 20-somethings daughters for a girls getaway in January. Any good suggestions of places to stay in DT Austin that are within walking distance of the bars, restaurants and shops?

A favorite is the Hotel San Jose on S. Congress. It has music, shops and restaurants right there, and is close enough to the hike and bike trail - if you want to do that kind of thing and a short hop (mile or 2) to 6th St.

If you are interested in doing some spa things - I highly recommend Milk + Honey spa in the Second St. area - again somewhere close that has shopping and restaurants (Malaga is great for tapas and Sangria!).

I also really enjoy Esther's Follies on 6th St. The show is funny and unique, quite a fun time.

What is your budget for a hotel? The San Jose is a great and in a great location, but it's a bit minimalist in its design. If you're looking for something more posh, the Four Seasons is fabulous as is the historic Driskill Hotel on 6th Street.

Hotel San Jose is a great suggestion. Hotel Saint Cecilia opened earlier this year and is rather pricey. Fab shopping along South Congress, as well as Vespaio, a favorite restaurant.

I love boutique hotels and I think the San Jose may be just the ticket. Although we probably won't be spending much time in the rooms, it doesn't look like there's any seating areas, which may be a problem. Can anyone comment on this?

Karlita - That's what I meant my minimalist. The rooms are pretty sparsely furnished and the floors are concrete. It's a cool place, with a great outdoor bar for you to hang out at if the weather cooperates, but the room decor does not really lend itself to lounging. The Hotel St. Cecilia, mentioned above, is in the same neighborhood, and much more luxurious, but also much more expensive.

Here's a link to a map of the downtown hotels to give you idea of what might be a little more walkable as far as the downtown restaurant/bar scene goes

Check out the Stephen F. Austin at 7th and Congress. Fine hotel and location for downtown Austin nightlife.
