There are lots of things to do. What are you interested in? Outdoor activities? Food? Wine? Museums/history? Will you have a car? Where are you staying?
Hi Lorena,
Call 512-478-0098 (7 days a week, 9-5) for the Austin Visitor Center to send you free maps and guide to Austin - lots of helpful info.
Visit their web site at http://www.austintexas.org for a quick start on Austin sites, attractions etc.
Welcome to Austin!
Hmmm we dont have any particular in mind, we could go and take a walk to the downtown area, any outdoor activity . . . We are spending a few hours in San Marcos. I know Austin adn San Marcos are not the same but I would like to visit a place like the riverwalk or that area, somewhere where you can grab a bite and then see other hisotircal but fun places . . . .
Ah and we are staying at the Hyatt Place Austin-North Central, we do have a car and a GPS . . .
Thanks for the input, I'll take a look at the website . . .
For local music listings, check the Austin Chronicle - http://www.austinchronicle.com/gyrobase/Issue/section?name=Music
Couple of tours that look like a lot of fun are the local Segway tours - http://www.glidingrevolution.com/
and Duck tours - http://www.austinducks.com/
Check out the bats (see the liink on the bats to the top right).
Some restuarants close by you might want to try -
Texas Land and Cattle - http://www.texaslandandcattle.com/files/locations-result.aspx?by=State&k=TX
Pappadeaux - http://www.pappadeaux.com/home/
If there is anything else we can help with, let us know.
Edited: 14 years agoYour outdoor activity may be limited if we have another scorching summer. (But it adds to the fun -- flip a coin to see who will open the car and turn on the AC.) If unbearably hot, put Barton Springs and a bat cruise high on your agenda. Take the bat boat which allows you to bring your own cold beers on board. (I think that's Lone Star --- call to check when you make your reservation.) Another must-do in the summer is rent a canoe or kayak and paddle around Town Lake.
thank you both! Sounds like fun! I want to do the kayak thing!!
Can't wait to go back home . . . I'm missing those hot hot summers!
We loved the Botanical Gardens and the boat tour to see the bats with Capitol Cruises. If you want to get out by the lake, the Oasis has great views of the sunset. Chuy's is always fun. Lots of live music like everyone else suggested.
Also good views from Mt. Bonnell!
You've gotten some great advice for things to do! Since you mentioned being able to grab a bite to eat and walk around, I recommend spending an evening on South Congress. There are several good restaurants down there, interesting shops, and a lively street scene on summer nights.
You could have dinner at South Congress Cafe or Enoteca, window shop for a bit, have a cupcake for dessert from the Hey Cupcake! truck, and have a drink or two at the pool-side bar at the Hotel San Jose. The Continental Club is also on South Congress if you're interested in checking out some live music.
I already check the kayak thing, or a cruise to see the sunset, that should be nice, and I guess will go to South Congress too, sounds like fun, we are not party animals so I think the atmosphere its gonna be right for us.
Now... french restaurants, Someone posted the Pappadeaux, and I read somewhere about 'chez nous', any other suggestions? I want to surprise my husband (he is french) by taking him to a real french restaurant, Chez nous looks good, but I would like to have more options . . .
