“ Kovalam Or Cochin in October???? ”

Hi All

I am off to Kerala with my wife in October for 2 weeks, and would appreciate some advice. Would you recommend going to Kovalam or Cochin?

I'm just conscious Cochin is more central to most places so it may be easier to get around all the touristy places??

Also, as I am going in October would it make more sense to go to Cochin, as there is more chance of restaurants etc being open.

Last year I went to Goa in October and quite a few places were closed,vas it was slightly out of season.

I really enjoy sight seeing and seeing local cultures, but also enjoy eating great seafood.It would also be good to have somewhere a bit lively to go to in the evenings.

Any advice from someone who has been to both places would be gratefully received.

hi ,ive been to both places,but not in october,they are very differant .kovalum being beachy and cochin being a small city.we flew to cochin last year from london with qatar airlines.we liked it ,had a relaxed no hassle feel,enjoyed it stayed a few days and from there booked a safari [6 hours minibus ride] we went on a couple of safaris which were good and saw many wild animals up close including large and baby elephants etc etc.stayed at the safari site for a few days.you could of course do something like this and still go down to kovalum for some beach but as you say october is early season and you would probably have to book it all independantly but we like that ,plenty of people on here to give you a hand

Hi,

Have been to Kovalam and loved it, in fact I am going back in January. However, it may be worth having a look at the " Beautification of Lighthouse Beach" entry on this forum 16th June.It may make your decision for you! There are other beaches in Kovalam but Lighthouse Beach is where most of the restaurants are.

Hi

The 'Beautification' should be finished before January and hopefully it will be finished before the usual season starts at the end of October. I will be down Lighthouse Beach either tomorrow or Friday and so will post an update. Don't, however, let it put you off.

Forgot to add that some places will still be closed as like you said for Goa - it is still slightly out of season. There will still be plenty of places to eat and shop.

Evening life in Kovalam is NIL. Most people spend it siting talking, drinking, watching (pirated) movies in restuarants, reading, playing games (snooker, cards, backgammon, etc). If you want lively then there are 1 or 2 night clubs in Trivandrum. Night life does not compare to Goa (although I have never been to Goa).

Cochin is more central to Kerala but all the beaches are outside the City. And as Cochin is a city it will be far busier and noisy than Kovalam.

Why not do 1 week in Kovalam and another in Cochin. It's only a 4 - 5 hour train journey between the 2 places and they both have International Airports - Kovalams being Trivandrum (18km away).

You could base yourself at Cherai Beach near to Cochin. That way you get the best of both worlds.

Kovalam is any day better than Cochin and specially for family vacation. You will love it there and oct is going to be good. I am also planning to travel there in oct
