getting about from Daylan |
|
Hi I.m going on holiday to Daylan for 2 weeks at begin of August and wondering if anyone could give me advice as the best way of getting around. I heard that the local dalmus is good but was wondering where you can get to and from Daylan within a day, and where people would recommend especially for photo opportunties. Also advice about which markets to go to |
|
Dalyan has a market on Saturday. You can get to Fethiye for their market on Tuesday by dolmus, either direct from Dalyan or via Ortaca or Dalaman - ABOUT 1.5 - 2 hours I should think. There is a lake up the river from Dalyan, and they run a boat dolmus to the town there (Koycegiz) on market day, which I think is Monday. You reach the beautiful long beach (Iztuzu - or Turtle Beach)by taking a boat dolmus down the river - or you can stop off instead at the ruins on the other side at Kaunos, or else you can take a minibus dolmus to the other end of the beach - these all provide great photo opportunities. Somewhere down on the Dalyan forum there is a thread with some good websites about the Dalyan area and things to do. It is a lovely area and I am sure you will have a great time!

The ancient ruined city of Kaunos is a must, you'd be amazed how many visitors don't bother going, and they're missing out on the best part of a trip to Dalyan. take the row boat across the river 9goes from end of the water front), and then walk - takes around 20 minutes. Do take the Dolmus bus to the other end of Iztusu beach, well worth it. Fethiye is about an hour by Dolmus. If you're feeling adventurous, you can get to Ephesus in about 4 hours or so by car. It is stunning, and well worth the trip. Overnight in Selcuk. Car hire in dalyan is easy and cheap, and driving in Turkey isn't the terrible experience many would have you believe. For fun, and plenty of cool swimming off the boat, (it's hot in August!) try the 12 island boat trip.

Matnicks; how hard / easy is the 20 min walk to Caunos? Also is this where you can get a tractor ride (not sure if i saw that in another posting a while back)

If you want to eat out try Begonvil restaurant on main street through Dalyan with all restaurants on, food and service are excellent. The guys there are great, you'll not be dissapointed. Jo

Most part of the way is easy to walk,it is a pretty good road, just the last part is steeper.

The walk is easy, though might be a bit hot in August! Yes there's a tractor with a covered trailor that runs from the Kaunos site to the river. If the driver's not there, ask the old ladies who run the two little cafes on that side of the river, and they'll phone him. You be invited to have a drink while you wait, of course! Entry to the site is about 8YTL from memory. You have to pay separately if you want to climb up to the rock tombs - the entrance is on right, along the road to Kaunos. This is a bit tricky over loose shale and brush, but well worth it to climb right inside the tombs, and look out over a really spectacular view.

thanks. the tractor ride sounds fun; something a bit different on your hols!

The tractor ride is probably the way to go in August, we walked it in September and it was hot then and was quite hard in the heat, something best done early morning or maybe later in the day.
