My Att/ Verizon razor (Quad band, international calls enabled) works there beautifully ( even in the lands end area of Fakarava)
Enjoy FP

Check this link for more info about cell phone coverage and use in FP:
For Meherio....Hi, You mention Verizon, but they tell me my phone will not work. I was advised to rent a global phone from them. What are your thoughts please? You make your phone service sound amazing.

Sorry for the false hope.

ryan,
You don't have to rent a global phone. Get an UNLOCKED GSM tri or quad band cell phone (usually about $25 on eBay), and you can buy a Vini SIM card in FP, which will give you a local (area code 689) Tahitian phone number, rechargeable credits, and free incoming calls. See the website posted above.
forgot to add -- you need an unlocked GSM 900 phone for the Vini SIM card.
Just to clarify........I have a quad band phone
and my service is with t-mobile. I can get text messages, receive calls and make outgoing calls.
For local calls I do what Barbie does I just switch
out my SIMS card.

No sim card switching with mine
My phone registers on the Tahiti network automatically. The calls are expensive but the convenience makes up for it.

Thank you all for explaning the phone service.
I will so rarely use an international phone that I am still looking into a global travel rental. I want the family back home to be able to reach us in an emergency. If I do not use it, it will cost about $20 total(shipping to/from the cell company). Otherwise, the added use cost is around $2.50 per minute, which is still a lot cheaper than the hotels.
I will try to find out if I can switch to a locally purchased Simi card for local calls, as Bo mentioned above.
