road trip from Roseville to Eueka |
|
We will be driving to Roseville from Sonoma on May23rd after a few days in SF area and Sonoma with family. I have work in Roseville on the 24th of May - all day - and then need to arrive in Eureka Friday night for another job on Saturday. We're planning to drive towards Eureka on Thursday evening and would like to find a beautiful location for an overnight en route - someplace midway that we can enjoy in the morning and then continue on to Eureka on Friday. We'll have time in Eureka area until Monday night. So our question is: What is the best route to Eureka by car from Roseville and where should we stay en route on Thursday night. Thanks! |

Unless you wish to backtrack to the SF North Bay you have two practical routes. The best but most boring (at least the first 4 hours or so) is to go North on 5 to Redding then West on 299. A great place to stop probably about 5 hours from Roseville is the old Weaverville Hotel about 45 minutes West of Redding. It is on the national Historical record & set in a most charming Village with street side spiral staircases on many of the old buildings, a couple of excellent cafes & The Historic "Jost House" a Chinese religious structure set in a downtown state park. then the next day a nice 2 to 3 hour trip down a gorgeous canyon coming into Eureka via Blue Lake. A second way is Highway 20 off Interstate 5 by Clear Lake & then North through the redwoods staying perhaps at Wilits. A third route is not recommended but extreamly scenic is highway 36 a most desolate route but lovely. You can travel for several hours not seeing another car & you only will pass one or two gas stations from Red Bluff to Eureka. Staying in the Red Bluff area would be necessary as virtual nothing on 36 from there to Eureka. Anyways I traveled the area for a number of years on business & still have a camper near Weaverville so if you have any questions fill free to E-mail me.

I like either of peddler665's routes, but, if you have time, I would prefer the Redding to Weaverville for the first night. I was not aware that the historic hotel still offered rooms, but, if they do, take up on it. Weaverville is amall, charming and historic. The road from there to the coast is designated as scenic.

We'll try to get to Weaverville, although it is a long ride and we can't leave Roseville until 5pm. We went ahead and booked a room at the Weaverville Hotel and it looks beautiful. We're a little nervous about the long ride, but think it will be worth it. Thanks for the advice!

The Garden Cafe across the street & down a half a block is excellent breakfast spot with outdoor & indoor seating. Another a block farther down the street is The Nugget with good Traditional style country breakfasts. Also The Llama Mama across the street has great coffee & breakfast muffins, rolls Etc. Careful though you may fall in love with this county seat beauty. A number of nice little shops, ice cream parlor, book store Etc. I spend a month or two fishing, hiking & just relaxing in the area evey summer. PS Your hotel has free INTERNET.

Yes, it is a long ride, but from Sacramento to Redding is on very fast I5, and then it is just 40 miles over to Weaverville.
