Well, not sure where you read the reviews about the restaurants, but I have been there many times as a local and find the Westin's restaurants to be really, really good. I think you'll find that hotel restaurants typically are pricey compared with others outside of the hotel. Hollywood Prime is a five-star steakhouse with amazing food and yes, it is very expensive (but worth every penny IMO). Across the street from the hotel (accessible by a covered walkway) you'll find Aizia - Asian fusion type food. It's one of my favorites. As well, there's Rivals sports bar. The Cafe in the hotel is typical breakfast, lunch, and dinner fare and is reasonably priced.
Turning right out of the hotel, north on A1A, you'll find Billy's Stone Crab. I haven't been there for a while but my friends love it. Also GiGi's (I think that's what it's called - I still say Giorgio's). For Pizza, Flicker Light, and for Oprah's favorite burger - LeTub (they don't take credit cards) - they're both on A1A as well. On the Broadwalk, I love Sugar Reef Restaurant - it's a little over a mile from the Diplomat near New York Avenue, on the beach.
If you head to downtown Hollywood, Fulvio's is a great Italian Restaurant. Two other restauants in downtown Hollywood that I also love are Lola's on Harrison (open for dinner only), and Sage.
For great Cuban food, head south out of the hotel and turn right at the first traffic light (Hallandale Beach Boulevard). Just across the bridge on the left-hand side is Padrino's. You should try it!
