Moving to Orlando

My family and I may be moving to Orlando this summer and I was hoping someone could steer me in the direction of the nicer neighborhoods. We're both in our 30's and our daughter will be almost 2 years old when we move. We're looking for a neighborhood that is family oriented, but isn't dead (don't need to walk to Starbucks, but avoiding the highway to get to it would be nice). If there are any neighborhoods with a little history, that would be nice (but I think most of Orlando is subdivisions). We'll be renting since we'll only be in the area for about 2 years. Something on the SW side of town would be best since I would be attending UCF's Rosen College down near SeaWorld. Thanks!

Except for older parts of town and Disney's tourist-attraction community of Celebration, Orlando is a place where residential neighborhoods are generally carefully sheltered from any sort of commercial activity, and you absolutely must go to Starbucks or whatever by car.

The Williamsburg neighborhoods south of the Rosen School appear sterile but OK--Bing Maps Birds Eye View seems available, so you can scan the area for cars or boats parked on the grass, whatever.

Northeastern Orlando and adjoining Winter Park have wonderful old neighborhoods, and the former Navy training base near Lake Baldwin has been sensitively and urbanely redeveloped, if you don't mind pseudo-Charleston architecture. Going west from there to Lake Sue, Lake Virginia, Lake Osceola, and Lake Maitland brings you into the Winter Park area. Unfortunately, this looks like a bad commute.

I suspect that Orlando locals will have entirely different suggestions.

DurhamHazey - How could you possibly wish to swap beautiful Durham Cathedral and Universities with its access to the North East coastline for Orlando? Anyway, I would have thought that being a Sunderland supporter would have been all the roller coaster ride that you need lol.

I think you need to find a good realtor ans ask them. Most here know the tourist rental areas south and west of Town.

The fact is, you need to find an area with great schools- that should be your priority. And realtors would know this.

Having said this, I have family in the area and they live in Hunter's Creek in a gated development . They chose there for the schools and the area.
