Tipping.

Off to Florida next year and I wonder if someone State side could give me a few tips on tipping. (no pun intended).

I usually tip quite well in the UK and I know the 15-20% rule with waitresses, cab drivers, bartenders and the 10% rule in self serve restaurants but who else should I tip and how much?

so a few questions..

how much do you tip porters?

Do you tip hotel reception staff?

How much do you tip chamber maids?

Do you tip staff at McDonalds and other fast food outlets?

Do you tip when out in the Parks?

Who have I missed out?

any advise appreciated

Cheers

Don't tip the bartender or cab drivers 15-20%. Leave a couple of dollars based on how many drinks you buy and just give the cab driver a couple of dollars depending on how long the drive is and if he helps you with bags.

The rest, I agree with partypa.

Donna and partypa hit it just right. Tipping is an art and a custom, lets just hope this one doens't deteriorate into a scrum..

Thanks for the replies folks.

Is there anyone I've missed off who I should be tipping?

If you have a car and valet we usually tip a few bucks when we retrieve our car.

Housekeeping we leave $2-$5 a day depending on if our kids make a mess-we leave it with a thank you not daily on the pillow so they get it. Bartenders get a dollar or two per drink, depending on how upscale the bar is. We tip at hotel reception and ask for the nicest possible room-sometimes we get upgraded and sometimes not-and yes,we do this at Disney hotels, same as we would at any other and have never been turned down. You tip shuttle bus drivers a buck-not the Disney ones though unless they do something special. You don't have to tip at fast food places. The concierge gets $5 if they actually do somthing for you(change a reservation, etc) not just answer a question. You tip at restaurants in the parks, not at fast food places. We tip maintenence at hotels when we need something extra(the fridge in hotel rooms is never cold enough and it needs to be adjusted with a screwdriver which we don't carry on trips)BAsically, the US is a service economy and if you someone provides a service, you tip. But if the service is bad, don't leave a penny or a tiny tip-this is really rude and unhelpful-ask to speak to the manager and bring the problem to their attention. Srvice workers make very small wages and they really count on tips from customers to pay their bills. Aren't we lucky to be able to afford vacations!Don't worry too much about the whole thing, you sound pretty sophisticated on the subject

This is the one thing that has me stressed for our upcoming holiday to the states as well, because in Australia we do not tip unless the service in a resturant is very exceptional and then it is only a few dollars not a percentage of the bill, i have travelled to Asia and have never tipped there either, it is just a mine field with who too tip and how much as you either look like a tight charlie or a massive tipper with no regard for everyone else that tips.........I would prefer to just pay more for food and services and never have to tip at all........

No need to stress over tipping-its just part of our culture and while that may not be so in Asia or Australia,it is here-easy guidelines to follow.
