It seems that a number of the posters are fully paid up members of the "we hate virgin atlantic" club.
I've been flying to LV for a number of years and apart from one instance when i flew with United, I have always flown to LV with Birgin (about 9 times) and plan on flying with them again in November this year.
Yes, the planes are the older style without the VOD system. But you will still ahve your seat back tv with remote control and a selection of about 20 films to choose from, as well as comedy channels, documentary channels and a few games to play.
I have always found the food edible. There have been ocasions where I ahve had to turn them away because they literally keep coming and offering food - sandwiches, chocolate, choc-ices when the films are on, etc, etc. All the drink, including alcohol are free for the whole flight or until they run out, lol. Either way, they ply you with so mcuh food, that I have had to turn them away on a number of occasions.
On my most recent flight with Virgin to LV, I did twilight check-in the night before and when i got to the airpot in the morning i was told the flight was cancelled due to hydrolic brake failure. Very annoying, but I'd rather find out when i'm on the ground, lol. We were told that we would be put up at the Hilton for the night and flown out the following day. I had a poker tounrament the folloowing day that i couldn't miss and when I told the customer service rep this, they were so helpful.
They sent me to Heathrow on the National Express (they paid), they put me on a Virgin flight to Los Angeles, then paid for a United flgith from LA to Vegas. They arranged everything and i made it to LV only 5 hours behind schedule..... amazing service and I'm indebted to them for their help.
Everyone is obv entitled to their opinion and some people evidently don't like Virgin - that's their choice. I however, think that they offer a excellent service, friendly staff, good prices and i especially love the fact that once i'm on the plane, i know i don't have to get off until i get to LV. That to me is priceless :-)
If you are able to afford it, treat yourself to Premium Aconomy, I highly recomend it, especially upstairs which is where I always try to sit now. There are only 2 seats each side of the aisle and plenty of leg space.
Finally, I have only been delayed once on my return from LV. The flight was delayed by an hour, but these things happen frok time to time.
Good luck with whatever you decide. And have fun.
