RTA to Progressive Field

We will be going to a Cincinnati Reds game in Sept. (yes I know I'm an early planner). As of now we are aiming for the Sunday afternoon game, weather permitting.

We will be coming from Howard, OH, I assume we will be coming on I-71 N.

Which is the best Park and Ride RTA station to park our car, off of I-71 or in that vicinity? Where would we get off once near Progressive Field? Tower City?

Thanks in advance!

Hello,

Your best bet is to use the Brookpark Transit Station. This station is near I-71 and has a very large parking lot. Yes, you'll want to get off at Tower City. The walk to Progressive Field is fairly short.

And just to be clear, the Cleveland Indians play at Progressive Field and I don't believe the Indians are playing the Cincinnati Reds in September.

Now that I think about it, the W.150th/Puritas station may be more convenient for you...

Agreed that W. 150th/Puritas station is a bit more convenient to I-71. Exit I-71 at W. 150th St., make a left and another left into the access road (it looks like you are going back to I-71 South; just continue on straight and you will get to the RTA Park & Ride lot, behind the LaQuinta Inn). Fares are $2.25 per person (discounts for kids and seniors) or $5.00 for an all day pass.

If traveling on a day when the West Side Market is open, if you purchase day passes, you could get off at the West 25th St. station in the afternoon and visit the West Side Market. There's a balcony there where you could eat food purchased at market stands. On a nice day, there's also a park at the corner of West 25th and Lorain across from the market's main entrance on West 25th.

Parking can be very cheap downtown (perhaps $10) if you're willing to walk 10 minutes to Progressive Field. That may be more economical if you have more than 2-3 persons in your car. Parking at the West Side Market is free, although the parking lot can be jammed on a Saturday between 9:30 a.m. and 2-3 p.m.

Thank you for all your reply's! Oppps! Thank you for correcting me, I accidentally put Cincinnati Reds. (We are going there that week too, and I had been doing some research in Cincinnati and had that team on my brain....LOL) I will also look more into the West Side Market, looks interesting....hopefully it will be open the day we are going there.

Anyway, as always you all provided me some very helpful information and saved me lots of researching time!

Thank you!!

I agree with TE above ...parking downtown can be (and often is for Indians games) a better option.

While driving in unfamiliar big cities can be intimidating, downtown Cleveland is small and easy to navigate from I-71. Sunday afternoon especially, is very easy to get in and out. Depending on how many people are going, it may even be cheaper to park downtown. Parking starts at about $20 by the stadium, but garages go down to $10-$15 about a [very safe] block from the stadium, and even $5 another block or so north on E. 9th.

Of course, if the Browns have a home game that September Sunday, ignore everything I just said.

Where would you suggest parking downtown if we decided to do that instead?

Oh and I looked into the West Side Market and unfortunately they are not open on Sundays! :(

If you're coming on Sunday and would like to check out the Terminal Tower observation deck and Tower City, the Soldiers and Sailors Monument, and The Arcade before the game, there are large surface lots just west of Public Square (the heart of downtown) that currently are $10 for all day on weekends. I don't know if they bump their fees for a game, but I doubt it given the distance from Progressive Field. See attractions in the "Cleveland Tips" travel article.

http://www.tripadvisor.com/Travel-g50207-c198218/Cleveland:Ohio:Tips.For.Visiting.Cleveland.html

These Public Square lots are about a walk of 10 minutes to Progressive Field. You can pick up a free bus trolley in front of the Horseshoe Casino on Public Square and ride it East 9th St. and walk a couple blocks south to Progressive Field. It would be more fun to walk down East 4th St. and turn left in front of the Q arena.

These lots typically are busy even into the early morning given their proximity to the Horseshoe Casino and the Warehouse District entertainment/dining district. If you're staying around downtown after the game, that also may be a attraction for these lots.

Another group of surface lots charging perhaps $5-10, depending upon the distance from the stadium (go an extra block and save $5) are on Prospect Ave. around E. 17t St. The Hanna Parking Garage also is there, but it charges $10 for games most of the time, especially if there are also events at the very nearby PlayhouseSquare, which there typically are on a Sunday in September. These lots also provide easy access to the Innerbelt avoiding much of the traffic around Progressive Field. To reach the stadium, walk west to Bolivar and take that to East 9th St. It's a 10-minute walk (the eight blocks are really about 3 normal city blocks). The big disadvantage of Prospect parking is that the walks are longer to downtown entertainment/dining districts and the lots will empty rapidly after the game.

On the Bolivar walk, note the Grays Armory building, one of the most historic in Cleveland. E.g., this was the first home of the internationally famed Cleveland Orchestra.

Sometimes, the Grays offer refreshments inside the building on game days. If so at the time of your trip, perhaps you can arrange a tour of the building/museum.

I'm not certain that there are parking garages charging just $5 on East 9th St. just a block north of Progressive Field. I doubt it. I used to park all the time at the garage on Chester just off East 9th St. It's three blocks north of Progressive Field, and the last time I parked there for a game it was $10. This garage has easy access to the I-90 Innerbelt avoiding the traffic after the game. Further north of East 9th St., perhaps around Superior, there probably are some $5 garages.

If this is an afternoon game, garages should be OK. If a night game, make certain you know the garage closing time.

Obviously, parking rates can change by the time of your trip.

Be certain to check out the excellent statue of Bob Feller, in his famed pitching stance, at the East 9th St. entrance to the stadium!

The back of the Northeast Ohio AAA map has an excellent map of downtown Cleveland. You also can download maps at positivelycleveland.com.

Enjoy Cleveland!

The U.S.S. Cod and the Steamship Mather would be two excellent downtown attractions in September. Both are on the lakefront. Check the "Tips" article.
