I recently visited Fredericksburg. I found it to be a town with tourist in mind. I found some of the shops to be interesting, but when I saw a pair of used cowboy boots in one shop with a price tag of a few hundred dollars, I started to pay attention and yes the prices of antiques and "vintage" were for the tourist. But the shop keepers were friendly and I enjoyed a very good German lunch. If you enjoy shops and lots of tourist then you will enjoy your time here.

Yessireee!

That's why I recommend folks stay somewhere else in Hill Country. There are many lovely sights including LBJ Ranch, peach orchards, Willow City Loop, Cooper's BBQ in Llano (just had to mention my favorite BBQ place!), tubing and wineries in Hill Country. But definitely give Fredericsburg a miss.

I wouldn't say miss it- just be prepared for what it is.

Had my first visit to Fredericksburg in mid May. Totally enjoyed my stay at Sophie's Suite, the LBJ state park and the Nimitz museum complex. The shops were very touristy and expensive but it was fun to walk around and look. Don't miss Fredericksburg but don't plan to shop there unless you have really deep pockets.

Fredricksburg Trade days is an option for a less touristy more local shopping experience, although as previously stated, Fredricksburg is all about shopping.

Yup...all about shopping and since the Homestead went south, there isn't too much to get excited about in that department either! None-the-less, we'll still go for the day, every now and then, (Memorial weekend, Sunday) enjoying the back roads drive (for us, 46 to 281 to Blanco, then west on 1623 or the road through Luckenbach, a really pretty 2 lane highway drive), have a nice lunch on Altdorf's patio, do a quick stroll down the street for some fun people watching (you can almost pick out those in town from Dallas for some reason :>), ascertain that nope nothing has changed, then head home by way of the Wildseed Farm and just enjoy a day "getting out of Dodge".

Occasionally the pattern will change--getting there early to hike Enchanted Rock, then heading to lunch and home. Or lunch at Altdorf's then a stop in Luckenbach coming home. Whatever, the drive from San Antonio can be quite pretty if you avoid I-10. It's a nice get away, but Boerne now has the better funky shopping.

Where would you recommend staying if not in Fredericksburg? We are going to a food festival there, and if there is some place else in the hill country nearby that is more appealing, I would love to try it. I prefer an inn to a b&b. Thanks.

There is NOTHING wrong with Fredricksburg. I think all the OP was saying is that there are no bargains to be had in the shops. The shops are very tourist oriented.

That doesn't hurt the atmosphere of the town. It's still a great place to visit and sight-see. I wouldn't hesitate to stay there.

As a former tourist and now a full time resident of Fredericksburg, I want to say that yes, Fredericksburg is geared for tourists in many ways. However, let me give an overview of what the guests of the B&B we own here have to say about Fredericksburg in general.

1. How wonderful it is to escape the city and come to a small and quaint town where the traffic is not horrendous and the atmosphere is still "small town".

2. They don't come just to shop. They love going downtown while here, but they also love going to the museums, Enchanted Rock, the wonderful restaurants here and taking the lovely drives all around the town. Willow City Loop is a favorite destination of many.

3. Fredericksburg is full of so many super places to stay. The Bed & Breakfasts, private guesthouses and the wonderful Hanger Hotel offer guests a huge variety of unusual places to stay. So many of our guests love coming back here after a day of sight-seeing and shopping and just relaxing. Our nights are quiet here in Fredericksburg and that makes for a wonderful night's sleep. There is a peacefulness here long gone from the larger towns and cities many of our visitors live in.

We have guests who return again and again and then never want to go home. Fredericksburg is no doubt growing and there are more and more tourists who come ever year....but there is a good reason. It's charm and quaintness overide any concept of the "pricey tourist" concept in my mind.

Don't miss out on our lovely little town. Fredericksburg is a memory maker.

I would highly recommend the Spanish Inn in Fredericksburg known as La Quinta.
