any nice hotel between houston & austin airport?

We are departing on an early flight from Austin airport & probably need to leave Houston the night before. Does anyone have any suggestions about fairly nice hotels to stay in en-route. What would be the best route to take for a Sunday am flight? We are presuming its gonna take 3-4 hours. Hopefully not too much longer than this!!

Many thanks,

Anne

How about a lovely resort in the woods? The Hyatt Lost Pines in Bastrop is about 30 minutes from Austin airport, and is much nicer than anything you're going to find closer to the airport -

Take I-10 to Hwy 71 (exit I-10 at Columbus). Austin's airport is on 71 as you get close to town. Avoid leaving Houston during rush hour. Our best time for the drive is slightly under three hours. (I have a lead foot.)

Speaking of a "lead foot": Keep an eye on your speedometer around Columbus. I got a speeding ticket on one of the lovely downhills. Later found out that this is common, and yes, after the ticket I have noticed others gettingt stopped in that same area near Columbus. But you're from Ireland, so not sure how they can pry the money out of your hands.

The Hyatt resort is a great suggestion.

I agree that the Hyatt in Bastrop gets great reviews. I have never stayed there myself. It is, however, a resort. I don't know if I would pay to stay there if I was only staying there for a place to stay for the night. There is a Hilton at the Austin airport. I have driven by it several times while driving between Houston and Austin and it looks nice. For a cheaper place, there is a La Quinta by the Austin airport. If you want to enjoy a night in Austin before leaving there are several nice properties in downtown Austin. We just stayed at the Hilton Garden Inn downtown and it was a nice upper moderate hotel. I have also stayed at the Omni, Hyatt, Hilton, Sheraton and Doubletree (a bit further away from the restaurants and bar in Austin).

Houston1836 makes a good point about do you want to stay at a resort when you're not going to get a chance to enjoy its services?

Traffic Sunday AM will be no problem. You should think about staying in Austin. From central Austin, it should take you 20 minutes to get to the airport, and another 5 - 10 minutes to turn in your rental car. (If it's real early, then less than five minutes since you just drop your key in the box.)

However, if you really just want a place to stay overnight, then stay at the Airport Hilton. The Hilton has a little bit of history as the former headquarters of the old Bergstrom Air Force Base that closed several years ago (and became home to our "new" airport.) It is apparently something of an architectural wonder -- a round building with a courtyard (that has since been turned into an atrium).

Halfway between IAH and Austin is Brenham, a nice town, home to Blue Bell Creameries (ice cream manufacturer). The Ant Street Inn is the place to stay there http://www.antstreetinn.com/

Too funny. We're flying to Shannon six weeks from today.

Bring your umbrella! You may not escape the rain. Our backyard is a sponge with all the water that was dumped on it. Had more than six inches of rain in the last ten days.
