Hi everyone:

A little backgound:

We are planning a ski vacation (1st week of February) for my family (myself, dh, and our 3 eleven year old boys. We are new to skiing (not new to cold weather activities though) and we are trying to sort out all the great options, etc.

We plan on taking lessons the first few days (dh and I have some experience...the boys do not, although we plan to try out a few hills in our area before coming). At this point we are leaning towards staying in the Canyons area (Red Pine, etc) and taking lessons at the Canyons the first day or so. I have read raves about the Deer Valley ski school, but one of my sons REALLY wants to try snowboarding (he skateboards and snowboards--with a sled that is like a snowboard--on the local sledding hill), so we would prefer PCMR or The Canyons.

Now for my questions:

What do you think about The Canyons as a location for us? I have read there are not as many green runs there...but we will all be taking lessons the first few days, and as people who come from the "Flatlands" the only ski areas we know have a few runs anyways! Also we plan on "branching out" to PCMR after a few days of lessons, anyways.

Also, will we really miss being near "the action"? We will be renting a car (thanks to everyone's input on my previous thread!) and it is my understanding that we "can" take shuttles/buses if we decide to split up. I would imagine the boys will be ready for downtime, etc after dinner, so I am thinking we afford to get more "space" if we stay outside of the immediate PCMR area. Missing the nightlife will not be a problem for us!

Thanks in advance for your help and I appreciate any and all input!

I cannot respond to the bunny slopes at the Canyons. but I can Deer Valley and PCMR bunny slopes. Deer Valley is serviced by two lifts and the area is super wide. PCMR is narrow and has a big drop off. Deer Valley is much safer, the childrens lessons are tops, but no snowboarding. My daughter started lessons at Deer Valley at 3 and was at blue at 4 and that going once a year. She skied once at PCMR and never again, at least until she is much older. Way Too many people & tons of teenagers who do not pay attention.

The Canyons has lots a blue and black. Its advantage is it huge and not packed. It disadvantage is unless are are staying thre you have to park, take an open air lift to the base freeze by the time you get there, then more list to the top. It is alos far from the action, but you can drive or bus.

Thanks for your reply. Unfortunately, Deer Valley is not a choice for us, as my one son would really prefer to try snowboarding.

Thanks,

kelly

You aren't far from the action anywhere in park city! the canyons really isn't much further from main street than Silver Lake (the main area of Deer Valley) - a few minutes at most - they are just on opposite sides of downtown.

generally speaking, the closer you stay to the lifts, the more expensive the lodging becomes, so you can find cheaper alternatives a short walk from the PCMR base than ski in/out at the canyons, and vice versa. getting around with our without a car is pretty quick and easy, and the town has a free bus system that connects all the major areas - kimball junction, the canyons, PCMR, downtown and deer valley.

great places for kids include the marriott summitwatch (heart of downtown, a block from the town-lift), marriott mountainside (slopeside at the base of PCMR), the Sundial and westgate (a "block" from the canyons gondola), and the grand summit (next to the canyons gondola). all these properties have some combination of pools, game rooms and other fun things for kids to do.

as for the slopes, they all have enough green runs that you will be fine for a few days at any one mountain. these places are huge. the biggest complaint about the canyons tends to be the massive size and difficulty getting from one area to another - problems you won't have as beginners because most of the green runs are concentrated near the gondola.

My biggest problem with PCMR is that it tends to get the most crowded, but ski school gets to cut lines, so that shouldn't be a problem for you either.

Thanks alvinut!

I will definately check into some of the locations you mentioned. I really appreciate your info regarding the Canyons. I have read so many reviews on ski websites, etc.,my head is spinning!

Again, we are coming from a perspective where we go to ski on a "hill" in Wisconsin (ie, there is 1 chairlift and a handful of runs!) So I think the beginner offerings for our first few days at the Canyons will suit us just fine.

Regards,

kelly
