Trying to decide between San Carlos and Affinia 50. San Carlos is 150 E. 50th and Affinia 50 is 155 E. 50th. Are they about the same? Currently have a reservation at QT Hotel in a deluxe king but starting to think it might be too small travelling with a 2 year old.

If you're asking which hotel is closer, the San Carlos or Affinia 50, they are on the same block and within equal distance of Times Square.

However, the QT is much closer to Times Square than the two places on East 50th Street. The Affinia 50 is suites, which you might prefer with a child; is it a suite that you're looking at at the San Carlos?

The San Carlos is a suite that is 410sf ($1,790 for 4 nts)

The Affinia 50 is a suite with 400-600sf ($1,642 for 4 nts)

QT is a great location just not sure about the room size not to mention the rate goes up 200.00 on Saturday night. overall, it is cheaper but less amenities and smaller room.

We like hotels with character and customer service. These seem to meet our expectations as opposed to some of the chain hotels I've looked into in this price range.

If I were traveling with a child I think I would definitely want more space and a suite. Also, I think the suite hotels are probably more accustomed to meeting the needs of families with children.

The San Carlos and the Affinia 50 are across the street from each other. I haven't been in either one of them, although I walk by them all the time. The Affinia 50 is a 50s/60s building that was probably built as an apartment building. The San Carlos is a pre-war (as in pre WWII) building, more European looking from the outside. If you haven't already done so, you should read the reviews on the site to see how these hotels stack up in terms of your personal preferences. The neighborhood may not be as close to Times Square as you would like, but it is a good central midtown location that isn't all that far from Times Square.

I don't know who owns the San Carlos. The Affinia 50 is owned by a local family company that also owns the Affinia Dumont, the Southgate, Shelburne, Beekman Tower, among others.

Stayed at the San Carlos last year. The hotel was lovely. The staff were friendly. I don't know who the owner is either but he was chatting to us and other guests over breakfast to make sure we were enjoying our stay. He couldn't get rid of one woman who wanted to tell him how much she loved her suite. Highly recommended.

The suites at the Affinia 50 tend to be larger than most others. I think both the Affinia 50 and the San Carlos were recently renovated. I think you will be happier away from Times Square with a baby. If you want to look at an all suite hotel a bit nearer TS, the Blakely is another possiblity with recently renovated rooms.

Thanks everyone! I think we have decided to go with the Affinia 50. For a little less money it is a bigger room than the San Carlos. With our son it seems like the best option. I'll let you know in November.

We stayed at the San Carlos last year, and are staying at the Affinia 50 next week. I'll try to remember to post a comparative review when we return. We loved the San Carlos, and would have returned there, but the rate was too high on this trip. We have two kids, ages 12 and 8, and the room we had at the San Carlos was very large for New York--a living room with a pull-out couch, and a nice bedroom, along with a small breakfast area. The room was very clean and nicely furnished, and the desk staff was very nice. The continental breakfast was a nice amenity, although it was nothing fancy. It was a several-block walk to Times Square, but my daughter and I walked all the way home from Lincoln Center after attending the Nutcracker ballet. Not a bad location, but not right in the middle of things. I suspect (and hope) that the Affinia 50 is similar.

not sure what your budget is, but if you want to stay at a nice trendy hotel IN Times Square, then check out the W hotel on the corner of 47th and Broadway

Just got back from the Affinia 50--wow, it was great. We had a corner room, which was huge. The living room was very large, by any standard, not just New York standards. We had a nice dining table, a full kitchen, a nice bedroom with a fabulous bed, and a smallish bathroom. Beautiful, stylish furnishings, Aveda bath products, pillow menu. Got a rate of $189 a night for the weeknights, $219 for the weekend--such a steal! This hotel and the San Carlos across the street are wonderful for families, if the prices remain affordable. The last time I checked the San Carlos, the prices had gone through the roof. I hope the same thing doesn't happen at the Affinia 50.
